Jen: "The Bombshell Behind the Bunny"
Of all the stands to take why stand with lipstick one might wonder? Well, its my belief that no matter how small a step you take on the journey towards conscious consuming, sustainable living and shrinking your carbon footprint, its a step worth taking. After the official launch of "The Beauty Rebellion project," the bombshell behind the "Bunny" removed our blind folds and gave us a rare expose at her secret, not so secret hideout.
So, what's the deal with cruelty free makeup and why all the secrecy?
Jen: Well it never hurts to look good when taking a stance. A flattering shade of cruelty-free lipstick can go a long way. But seriously – we use cosmetics, skin care, and hair care every day and it’s easy to be unaware of where they come from or how they’re developed.
Why is the nomeclature "cruelty free" needed?"
Jen: It would be great if cruelty was not part of the equation when creating products designed to help us look our best. Unfortunately with many companies still testing their products on animals, this isn’t possible. As a result, it’s more important than ever that we as consumers be conscious of what we buy. It’s easy to forget just how powerful our shopping habits can be. And by informing others of alternative options we can make a positive change and look great in the process!
Tell me about the Bunny (inspired logo)? What's the big deal about animal rights for those not in the know?
Jen: Aside from being cute, the bunny has now become a universal symbol for the cruelty-free movement and we really wanted to incorporate it into our branding. It really underscores what we’re all about. The flag that appears next to the bunny is symbolic of our “rebellion” against companies that test products on animals.
Every day cosmetics, skincare and hair care products are tested on rabbits, mice, primates, cats and dogs. Not only is this testing unethical and harmful, but it’s also unnecessary and often ineffective. There is no reason that cosmetic companies can’t create great products without having to test them on innocent animals. In fact countless brands at all price points have already proven that it’s possible to make awesome products minus animal testing: Think of Aveda, Urban Decay, Revlon or Jane Cosmetics.
People are often surprised to learn how many brands are actually cruelty-free. I think there’s this idea that they’re always expensive or out of reach for the average customer. This isn’t true and in many cases they’re more accessible than you would think. This is definitely something we like to make people aware of.
As the leader of the Beauty Rebellion, where do your new recruits come from?
Jen: Our recruits come from everywhere – this is an equal opportunity movement! Cruelty-free products can be relevant to just about anyone and we’ve seen a lot of interest in our concept. Of course our loyal cruelty-free beauty junkies love us, but we also have seen a lot of support from people who are new to the idea of buying cruelty-free products and want to learn more – which is great! Plus this is Los Angeles and people like to relax and have some fun while supporting a cause or learning about something new – our events are designed to be just that – fun and informative - which is resonating with a lot of people.
What is the "mission" of "The Beauty Rebellion "cause"?
Jen: I think our mission statement says it best: The Beauty Rebellion Project’s mission is to introduce the uninitiated to the world of cruelty-free cosmetics, skincare & haircare products while partying it up in the city of angels. We provide beauty, booze and fun – you just have to bring yourself.
What's your favorite cruelty product of the moment?
Jen: The Vegan Palette from Urban Decay. Those who attended our launch party got one of these bad boys free in their Rebel Bags and I’m still infatuated with it. It includes 6 vegan eye shadows in some really cool shades and the packaging alone makes it a must have accessory!
How can one get a rebel bag and what is it?
Jen: The Rebel Bag is given to our event participants and includes the latest and greatest cruelty free cosmetics, skin care and hair care products. It’s one of the many reasons to attend a Beauty Rebellion Event. Join our mailing list (http://www.beautyrebellionproject.com/contact-us/) to find out when the next event will be scheduled so you can get your hands on one.
How can cruelty-free companies join your cause?
Jen: Companies that don’t conduct testing on animals, don’t use suppliers that test on animals, and don’t use animal ingredients, can contact us to submit products for our Rebel Bags. We also coordinate private or special events for beauty brands. I can be reached at jen@beautyrebellionproject.com. We also have a sponsor mailing list for those who want to keep in touch (http://www.beautyrebellionproject.com/sponsors/).
Talk to me about the success of the launch party- any wonderful surprises?
Jen: The launch party was a huge success. We hosted it at the American Vintage clothing store in Los Feliz and were so excited by the turnout. In addition to some awesome performances by local DJs, we also had free makeovers provided by Jane Cosmetics, raffles, an old fashioned BBQ complete with veggie burgers and more.
This event was also a benefit for Best Friends Animal Society (http://www.bestfriends.org), which is an organization that was originally started as a shelter for unadoptable animals in Kanab, Utah. The shelter now has over 2,000 cats, dogs, horses, birds and other animals from shelters and rescue groups. Plus, they have branched out in to cities like LA, to raise awareness about the needless deaths of animals in shelters. When they started in the late 1980s, there were about 17 million dogs and cats being killed in shelters each year. Now, with Best Friends’ help, the number is closer to 5 million. Needless to say, we were thrilled to be able to promote their organization and raise money for their cause.
A Dog’s Life Rescue (http://adogsliferescue.org/) also had several animals on hand in need of homes, and we were happy to help raise awareness about all the homeless animals out there. There’s no reason to buy from a breeder or pet store when so many animals are being euthanized every day.
I think we were all just surprised by how much support we received from sponsors, attendees and others. They really helped make our launch event a success and we’re very grateful. We’re looking forward to our next event.
Who is the founder of The Beauty Rebellion and what's her story?
Jen Mathews is the founder and mastermind behind the Beauty Rebellion Project as well as mybeautybunny.com, which is one of the most successful cruelty-free beauty blogs online. She has always been passionate about cruelty-free beauty and cosmetics and her blog was initially a way of sharing that interest with everyone, while keeping things fun and informative with product reviews and giveaways. She really just wanted to spread the word and offer valuable information to others interested in cruelty free beauty products and the industry. Her blog now has around 10,000 readers a month, which is something she never could have expected. The Beauty Rebellion Project seemed like the next step and the natural evolution of her blog. It also combines two things she loves dearly: cruelty-free products and having a good time!
