A 4th of July Fiasco: Friendless on the 5th
By tessinatlanta, Tuesday, July 5, 2011It was supposed to be a fantastic 4th. We were going to be in Buckhead to watch the Lenox Fireworks. It was supposed to be great because my friend Stacy owns a condo right there on Peachtree. Okay, it does not face Peachtree, but we could just take our chairs and walk down there within say 20 to 30 minutes before the big show and be able to get a good spot to watch the big blast of color.
But you know, I guess things never do turn out like you plan them to. I could just say the rain and the lightning and the downpour put a big bummer on the evening. But that was the least of it. I had invited another friend of mine to come on down to Stacy's place and watch the fireworks and she brought a friend of her's. Well let's just say the mixture of friends brought about a disastrous night.
We had had a successful cookout despite the wind, the rain and a portion of the grill that would not heat up. But we made it through dinner and all was going well as we relaxed with dessert and pondered when would be a good time to head to the fireworks. So we gathered our chairs and decided not to take an umbrella because we only had 1 and we figured the rain was over for the night. We of course were wrong about that. But when we started to walk up to the corner, it was not raining. We found a spot across the road from Lenox and set up our chairs. It was a little cool for the night cause of the storms we had had earlier. One friend was feeling a little chilly in the summer breeze. And then it started to rain and she got even more miserable. I told Bobbi to just go under the awning of the building behind us. The rest of us just sat as the light rain was falling around us. Some people had umbrellas and others were just getting wet like we were. Well, after another 5 or 7 minutes of sitting in the rain, my friend Bobbi decided she had had enough and wanted to go back to the condo. My friend Stacy who owns the condo didn't want to leave and I figured we should just stay put cause hey we were already wet and we had come to see the fireworks after all. But Stacy gave the keys to my friend Bobbi and I thought she told her just to go back to the condo. But apparently Bobbi asked abou what to do with the keys and Stacy said to leave them with the concierge. I did not realize my friend Bobbi was going to be leaving for the night. Anyway, Stacy and I continued to sit in the rain and it started raining harder, but we still decided to just wait it out. So we sat in the rain hoping the fireworks would start soon.
Ten minutes later, my friend Bobbi shows back up at our chairs in a frantic state. She had lost her friend Debra who had gone back to the condo with her. Apparently she could not find her anywhere. Now unbeknownst to me was just how drunk Debra was. But Bobbi was frantic and upset and demanded that we leave and help her find Debra. Now what I wish I had said was - just calm down and sit and wait for the fireworks and we will finder her- I mean she's a grown woman and she knows where the condo is doesn't she? But we tried to calm her emotions and we picked up our chairs and headed back in the direction of the condo. We never did see Debra and Bobbi was just demanding to leave. They had come on MARTA as had I. So my friend Stacy said she would drive us up to the MARTA station since it was raining. We gathered our things and headed to the parking garage. We could have walked to MARTA twice in the time it took to drive us up the road. We got out. I apologized to Stacy - who was near tears from frustration. She was pretty hot under the collar. I was a little annoyed at the way Bobbi was acting. And as we got out at MARTA there was her drunk friend Debra sitting at the sidewalk. But instead of being happy that she found her friend. Bobbi turned on me and proceeded to tell me how rude my friend Stacy was and that we all should have gone back to the condo with her when she wanted to leave because -- and I will quote for you here "if one person in the group wants to leave then everyone should leave. " I disagreed with her and said she gave you the keys to go back and chill at the condo. But according to Bobbi that is not what happened and she was ready to just leave and go home and we all should have gone back with her. So she is ranting and raving in front of the MARTA station at me- and she turns around and her friend Debra has disappeared again. So I asked her what do you want me to do? Do you want me to help you find Debra? Just tell me what is it you want me to do? She screams well I don't know and walks off. So I just got on MARTA and went home. What a fun night! Oh and as I was heading into the MARTA station the fireworks were being shot off- but I was too far down Peachtree to see anything except a few sparks over the very tall buildings.
So I finally get back to my car and try to call my friend Stacy to apologize for the behaviour of my friends. But she is not answering my calls. I found out today via a very nasty voicemail message that she was stuck for hours in Buckhead traffic just trying to get back to her condo. She is mad at me because apparently I invited my friends to her place for the fireworks and she never invited them. And I have not even tried to call my friend Bobbi cause I think she owes me an apology for ruining my 4th. But it looks like I am down 2 friends on this 5th of July.
I am really looking for some feedback on this. What would you do? Who is right and who is wrong? Am I just better off leaving all this drama? I have tried to apologize to Stacy. But after the tirade and nasty voicemail she left me I don't even want to talk to her right now. I still need to get some things from her condo that were left-- so I need to get in touch with her to pick up some of my things. But what is a person to do? I really am looking for suggestions.
