i went to visit an old friend today

I used to call him "little brother." I read his poetry, and visited him at least twice a week. Then we fell in love, and we experienced all the silly side-effects that add up to an inappropriate love affair, and then we didn't communicate for a couple of years. Today, I drove down his windy street, and thought it would be nice to drop in. Normally, I'm not a person who drops in. It was good to see him, to re-enter his busy world, and to meet the new people who also drop in at his busy house for an infinite variety of reasons. It's good to reconnect.
