Heartbreakingly bad day
By terryallen, Saturday, May 22, 2010, 4 commentsI was at work for ten minutes this morning, when a call came from my daughter, who had just been bitten on the face by our beloved dog. It took me a few minutes to get out the door and head for home. (Boss tried in every way she could to keep me on the job--how out of touch can one person be?) When I got to her, my darling girl was a wreck, more because of the mental anguish than the physical pain of the 3/4-inch gash under her eye, itself no picnic. The emergency room was in the same place it always is. The doctor and nurse were exceptionally personable, and we were on our way three hours and three stitches later. The scarring will be minimal.
While we were in the hospital, my clear-headed child arranged for a new home for Wolfie with a group of her friends who adore this big, soft, usually well-mannered beauty of a dog who has been with us for seven months. He'll be loved, indulged, and pampered in his new home with its fenced back yard and always-open door, and we'll be able to visit him when we wish, but you know it's a very different matter when you're visiting the dog you used to live with, right?
Saying goodbye has always been incredibly difficult for me. I can't have a pet in my house who has attacked my daughter. There's no question what I need to do, but, oh, it pains me to imagine telling him one last time that we're going for a car ride, that he's a good boy, and that I love him.

I cannot imagine going
I cannot imagine going through that. We got our oldest dog when she was a 6 month old puppy and our oldest daughter was 2. Our "puppy" is now 2 years old, older dog is 10. When the baby was born I didn't think either dog would react negatively, but you truly never know. I was so afraid of something like that happening.
I am sorry your family has to go through this. Our babies do come first, though.
two days down the road
Thank you for your kindness, Christine. Apparently, Wolfie is very happy in his new home and has bonded with the young men there. That's a great comfort. My other dog Mandy (ironically she's the pittie) is also very happy because she has us to herself now. My daughter's keeping a photo record of the healing process to use in future gore makeup creations (she's a theatre person).
I have a friend who regularly comes out with his favorite platitude: "I'm sure it'll all work out." Most of the time, this drives me insane, but this time I think he's right.
How did I miss this?!
Hi Terry,
Just stopped by and read this blog, I don't know how I missed this before. I'm so sorry.

that's life--that's what all the people say
It's been a few weeks, and everything is shaking out to be all right. Wolfie loves his new home, and we get to see him from time to time. India's scar adds a certain depth to her facial character. Of major importance, we have learned that a 900-square-foot house is just too small to accomodate two dogs.
