More about Me: My house is decorated with memorabilia of my daughter's favorite band. I regularly rush my two dogs to the emergency vet clinic, to find out which of them ate toxic substances. I graduated university magna cum laude with a degree in writing, at the age of fifty-four, and am a co-editor of an online literary journal. Few have beaten me at Scrabble, and I am a poor loser. I profess to be a vegetarian, unless the food is free. I'm a theatre performer, usually playing the role of the aunt, maid, or mother-in-law; one time, I was cast as a robot/zombie.
Favorite Music: Neutral Milk Hotel, Tom Waits, Modest Mouse, Regina Spektor, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, The Decemberists, Bright Eyes, Fall Out Boy, Mozart, Chopin, Toots and the Maytals, Jeff Buckley, John Spillane, Oingo Boingo, Ry Cooder, Lou Reed, Paul Simon, The Smiths, Spoon, Vampire Weekend, Amanda Palmer, Cecilia Bartoli, Gogol Bordello, Elvis Costello.
Favorite Books and Writers: Truman Capote, Collette, Nabokov, Dostoyevsky, Annie Dillon, John Updike, J.D. Salinger, Jerzy Koskinski, Thomas Mann, Robertson Davies, Robert Graves, Augusten Burroughs, Amy Tan, Rudyard Kipling, Jane Austen, Mark Twain, Hermann Hesse, Emile Zola.
I am most proud of: My strength, which has enabled me to thrive during trying times: the death of my mother and sister, teenage pregnancy, geriatric pregnancy, spousal abuse, chronic pain in my daughters, and many, many letters of rejection from publishers.
I am most guilty of: Scarlet O'Hara syndrome. I can--and do--worry about my troubles tomorrow, and this makes for a great deal of last-minute scrambling to patch things together. This works pretty well for me, with the exception of the demon that comes to visit me at two o' clock in the morning to remind me of my financial woes. I'm not proud of this.
The world would be a better place, if only: We all practiced kindness to animals. It is, after all, what makes us fully human.
Words I live by: Sha-la-la-la-la-la live for today.
Interests: theatre, poetry, folk music, opera, my daughters, the care of young children, education, botany, psychology, history, personal histories. dogs and cats. literature. tennis. making things out of recycled materials.
Profession: writer. for money, am a child care worker.
