If You Want To Kick Some A _ _, You Need the Right Shoes

Girls, here’s the deal that no one ever told you, well no one ever told me anyway - if you need to kick some butt in this world, you need the right shoes.

Some years ago I was doing some consulting work for a small family trucking business.  Boy that was tough!  It was a predominantly male environment and as you can imagine, my more female style of doing business didn’t really fit in.  Boy was I a fish out of water!  But I am feisty, fiery and oh did I mention hard headed?  So I persisted.

One day I was running a meeting for the major players in the business which consisted of about eight men and one or two women.  We were having a meeting, which I was supposedly leading, when all of a sudden a shouting match erupted between the CEO and his head saleman.  Like two big bull walruses, the stood up and started tusking each other with their words.  They were shouting and screaming and I thought, “Oh my god, what am I supposed to do about this?”  I have never encountered this before in my work.

No...Doctor...Not My Stilletos!

I am "obsessed" with high heels.

It doesn't matter if they are a sleek pump,  a sexy sandal, or a chic pair of boots. I love them all!

From my high school days, through my college years, I only wore heels.

Maybe it was psychological because when I wore heels, I felt confident... and sexy... which put a glide

in my stride.

For nearly thirty years, I put my feet on stilths, not realizing the consequences of my actions would

some day catch up with me.

One day, I was seated at my desk.

Suddenly, I felt a tremendous amount of pain that shot up my left leg. The intensity of the pain nearly

had me in tears. It came out of nowhere.

It lasted for a few seconds...boy... how it brought me to my knees.

When I went to the doctor, she examined my leg, and asked a few questions.

She smiled and said, "Invest in a good pair of flat shoes".

Simple as that.

In my mind, it wasn't that simple. However, it really came down to one thing, pain.

Did I want to continue to look really cute in my stilletos, or did I want to

consider the health factor.

It was a bitter pill to swallow and a fact of life.

Flat Footed

skirt loves

You don't have to fall flat. You can just fall for flats.

Target's Merona Madalena Suede Flat is an inexpensive way to look fashionable for fall. The shoes come in a slew of colors and are easily paired with jeans, shorts or dresses. Bright pops of reds, yellows and browns will keep you autumn appropriate.

Or at least until the other shoe drops.

Shoes with a Twist (and Button)

skirt loves

I just discovered a brand new shoe called Switchflops.  These shoes were developed by a teacher Lindsay Phillips whose motto is "Change your style, not your sole."  Simply buy one style of shoe (I chose the Lilly cork 2" heel) and buy new straps to match your varying outfits.  These colorful straps and buttons conveniently velcro onto the frame of the shoe and sell for $12.50 each.  Think of all the money you will save by changing the straps instead of buying cute new shoes.  This is a dream come true for shoe lovers who don't have the fortune of Emelda Marcos.

Check the many designs at www.switchflops.com or right here in Greensboro at Fleet-Plummer on Battleground Ave.

Judy Stead

skirt loves

In college, Judy Stead majored in her two favorite subjects, reading and drawing, and has found this to be an endlessly useful combination over a creative career as teacher, designer, art director, artist and illustrator. Besides illustrating books for children, Judy’s art appears in other print media magazines, greeting cards, gift wrap and on paper partyware. And sometimes, in galleries and museum shops, when there’s time to do work that isn’t on assignment! She lives with her family in Charlotte, North Carolina, land of “Carolina Blue” sky and an incredibly beautiful springtime.

Standing My Ground

skirt loves

While sorting through old clothes last week, I realized with some amazement that I haven’t worn a pair of high heels for at least a year. Gazing at my old shoes, heaped forlornly together on the floor of the closet, was like thumbing through the pages of a tattered journal, and I wondered at the self who once considered them essential to her wardrobe. I vaguely remember the woman who stepped out in these shoes; she danced in strappy heels in darkly hip basement clubs, and by daylight, wore conservative pumps which matched her briefcase. Was that really me who shopped for maroon or white heels to accent a suit and toted all the shoes off to the repair shop so regularly that the proprietor knew me by my first name? I wore each pair thoroughly, and when they’d pretty much self-destructed, I gave them a proper Goodwill burial before prancing off eagerly to buy a replacement.
