North Vs. Turnip Greens
By SusanConway, Saturday, January 29, 2011I had the funniest thing happen to me at Piggly Wiggly. It was Thanksgiving time, we had all kinds of people giving us their meal orders for the holiday. A northern couple come up to me, giddy because this is their first Southern Thanksgiving. I am telling them about our "sides" and the guy says, "Oh, I love turnips. The potato looking thing"
I said, "Yes, a lot of people like the root. Greens are a big thing around here." The guy looked confused. He said,"So the turnip is the root?"
I stared at him for a minute with a huge smile plastered on my face...waiting...waiting.. for the punchline, like TA_DAH- JUST KIDDING! But, it never came.
So, I looked behind me to see if any of my other fellow Southerners had heard this conversation and ofcourse no one had. He stated awestruck, "I had no idea that the top part of the turnip was greens!"
So I say, "Uh-Well, Sir...The greens...are... (I motion with my hands for emphasis)-connected to the turnip root... Hence, the name, Greens, and turnip root, turnip...greens..." He was sincerely in shock. I was both amazed and amused.
