New Orleans transplants Donna and Rena are both mainstays in Charleston’s creative arts scenes. Donna, a visual artist, has recently delved into storytelling by quilt, while Rena’s warm-weather vintagey venture, Happy Camper Snoballs, has locals longing for sweet summer nights.

Rena: “Sharing a sense of adventure and sharing a passion for art and learning are some of the many things that keep us together.”

Although Glazed Gourmet Doughnuts, their King Street doughnut bakery, is only in its infancy, the shop has been getting rave reviews and leaving Mark and Allison to keep up with demand. Locals love their inventive flavors like The Purple Goat and Maple Bacon, but you can’t go wrong with a well-loved glazed.

Dick and Nancy met in 1951 while he was working abroad and she happened to be visiting a friend in Venezuela. It was love at first sight for Dick, who asked Nancy to marry him two weeks later. Nancy said no, and then changed her mind in the morning. Through multiple countries, they’ve had kids, grandkids and plenty of adventure.

Dick: “My father told me two things: First, always tip your hat to a lady and second, marry a girl that’s fun. I said that girl is gonna be mine.”

Liz and Kari were a couple of soccer moms “trudging our kids around from tournament to tournament in various cities, wanting to enjoy what each community had to offer,” says Liz. After finding the same chains and big box shops in each town, they began to hatch a plan for an online multi-city directory and ongoing blog (“the where-to and the how-to” says Kari). “Two Doors Down is two-fold, we live two doors down from one another and we want people to discover what is right around the corner—or just two doors down,” says Liz.

In 1989, Meredith (on the right) was signing up for a summer camp at USC when she got the first inkling of a duplicate doppelganger. “One of the counselors that was registering the students thought that I was another Meredith English that she knew. She told me how funny it was that we were both blonde and blue-eyed!” Years later, the other Meredith (left) was having spam issues at the College of Charleston, where she is a marketing director, when an email popped up with the subject line Hello from Meredith English.

The problem with Stacy and Sallie is that they usually run in very different circles. Stacy, the owner of Hampden Clothing, a King Street boutique consistently recognized by Vogue, and Sallie, the chief operating officer of a business and taxation law firm, are often mistaken for the other. “Last Christmas I was shopping in Grady Ervin and one of the guys asked why I wasn’t talking,” says Sallie. “They seriously thought Stacy was playing a joke on them.

The first name that comes to mind on the topic of Citadel-ceiling-shattering might be Shannon Faulkner; but hers was only its first tiny crack. It was Nancy, the third woman to enroll at the Citadel, who was the first to graduate from its hallowed halls. Following the footsteps of her father, a decorated Citadel grad himself, was never the original plan, but she jumped in with both feet and a buzz cut when the option arose.

It’s not unusual for young girls to have wild adulation for pop hunks, and Barbara did… it’s just that she didn’t know who he was at the time. In 1956 young Bobbi spent a pre-rock-royalty day with Elvis Presley, who happened to be shadowed by a photographer at the time.

Carol had just turned 19 and was home from her first year of college when news of the 1969 Stockade Riot at Fort Dix compelled her to act. Already running in anti-Vietnam War circles, she considered this her final straw. “Now I had proof that the guys were being shockingly abused in addition to being used as cannon fodder.” So in the summer nights she made five roundtrips to the Canadian border, dropping young anonymous soldiers off and then getting her odometer turned back by handy mechanics.

Laura’s first radio gig was about location, location, location. “I chose a college radio internship mainly because I loved NYC and it would allow me to take the train in several times weekly.” After making her first bounce from The Big Apple to Sacramento, she made her way through three more states (and six more stations!) before coming to the Lowcountry. “I found myself really loving Charleston; the program director Mike Allen is the best, my golden retriever digs the beach and I met my husband here.

A ten-year vet of her self-titled show, Tammy takes her public pulpit seriously. “I have a responsibility to relay the message of hope, love, awareness, and becoming involved in your community.” And she doesn’t shy away from the harder discussions either on The Tammy Show: “Domestic violence, mental health, breast cancer awareness and child abuse—these topics deal with people’s life situations.

If you thought coaches were just for Pee-Wee leagues, you’d be wrong. As a certified master coach, Cathy gets clients in gear. “Coaching is very different from consulting, counseling, and mentoring. Coaching is a strategic partnership in which the coach empowers the client to clarify goals, create action plans, move past obstacles, and achieve what the client chooses.” Cathy might spend one day with a major corporate CEO working on management techniques and the next she could be walking an individual through new work opportunities in order to find forward focus.

Olan Quattro

In her mixed media work, Charleston artist Olan Quattro explores memory and myth. Her collages are constructed from the forgotten pieces of our lives. Each piece is first layered with old letters, photographs and notes and then painted. The layers represent the passing of time, the erosion of memory.

The pieces shown here are from her project, “September Fashion Issue,” in which she challenged herself to create a collage from every consecutive page of Vogue’s 2009 September issue.

Helen Hill is constantly rolling out the red carpet. As Executive Director of the Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, she’s making sure visitors fall in love with the city just as the locals have. “We see ourselves as the first stop to a lot of other good things. If the visitor experience is strong, then we have a leg up on economic development.” A native of the city herself, she took the helm of the CVB just one month before Hugo hit. “It was initiation by fire in the best way.

From a young age, Lynn was taught that volunteering was paramount. Today she carries on her mother’s prescient words: “the highest level of living is giving.” It’s by that token that Lynn came to form Lowcountry Orphan Relief. Lynn’s insight into the plight of abused and abandoned children comes from years as a  guardian ad litem, a representative for children once they’re in the court system. In 2003 she formed LOR to provide clothing, toiletries, books, school supplies and stuffed animals for these children as they navigate life after being taken out of their homes.

Wendy Jaffe CEO of Conejo Deals

How does a successful attorney become co-owner of eastern Ventura County’s premier daily deal site? Through a very long and winding road…

While Wendy Jaffe was growing up, her father -one of Los Angeles’ top divorce attorneys-  would come home from work every night and talk about his day. He would tell wonderful tales about his clients and how much he loved helping them and all sorts of magnificent things about being an attorney. Naturally Wendy decided to go to law school after graduating UCLA.

After receiving her Masters in Divinity from Harvard at the age of 39, Louise made her way south and now resides in the hearts of College of Charleston students. “A student who had taken five courses with me was once asked, ‘How can you take five classes with one professor?’
He responded, ‘Because you never really know what’s going to happen in Doire’s classroom.’”

Five Lessons I Never Learned:
1. Forget the rules about little black dresses, I’ve found that cowboy boots go with everything.

Jane is a veteran of Fortune 100 companies whose second act has been to “consult, speak and write about leadership development and women’s issues.” Her latest venture is in its early stages—a women’s leadership institute in partnership with the Center for Women. “I firmly believe that women in business can be both powerful and well-liked.”

Five Lessons I Never Learned:
1. I never learned that nice girls don’t talk about their accomplishments.
2. I always thought it was silly to wait for the good things to come.

Who’s dressing Army Wives? That’s Emmie, whose job goes lickety split from working with 100 people at a military ball to 50 in a mud run to just two actors on set. “Some people keep boundaries when it comes to being friends with your actors. I find it necessary to break that rule. Can you imagine having to trust a stranger to dress you every day?”

Five Lessons I Never Learned:
1. I never ever learn from one mistake. I find that being a repeat offender shows that you have good, solid consistency.

To see that Erika Grace was better prepared to understand financial management at a younger age than most of us may be a bit of an understatement. The founder and president of EG Collegiate Career Consulting (www.iwillsucceedincollege.com) says that early lessons shared with her as the oldest of two children about how to manage money have contributed to her success in doing so today.
