When Mike wanted to buy some modern, eco-friendly furniture for his house and couldn’t find anything he liked, he decided to put his architecture degree from SCAD to use and design his own. He liked the results so much—and so did his friends—that he opened up a shop to manufacture, design, and build his own residential and commercial furniture, along with custom work. The result is Structured Green, and if you’ve ever admired Savannah Bee Company’s beautiful honeycomb doors on Broughton Street, you’ve already appreciated their work firsthand.

With four sisters, four daughters (from left, Nora, Hazel, Grace, and Willa) and a dog named Rosie, it was high time the author/historian tackled a women’s adventure story. Out this month, Dean’s long awaited Unbound: A True Story of War, Love, and Survival, retraces China’s Long March. Thirty women were among the 86,000 Communists who embarked on the treacherous 4,000-mile journey in 1934. One year and 4,000 miles later, fewer than 10,000 soldiers—and all 30 women—survived.

You may not recognize Justin Willingham’s face, but his cool and melodic voice is a familiar sound. He is Assistant Operations Manager for WKNO FM and hosts the afternoon programming. He had been a dedicated WKNO volunteer since he was just 15 years old, and after returning to Memphis from Indiana University, he was pleased to find a job opening at his public radio home. “Public broadcasting, despite what people accuse it of, provides the least biased coverage.

A native of Charlotte, Tracy loves his city. And luckily for his city, as the president and principal consultant at Russ Communications, he gets to choose the projects his company takes on, most often working with corporations, non-profit organizations and community initiatives that want to make themselves—and their community—better. “The work is who I am,” he says.

The man behind Saul Good Restaurant & Pub in Fayette Plaza – celebrating two years this month and rated No. 1 on Urban Spoon and Trip Advisor since last summer – is adding a second jewel to the crown with a Hamburg location, set to open in early April. Complete with a mythical “back story” about Saul being a jeweler who has collected gems and recipes from around the world, the pubs – which Rob owns with Chef Jeff Mayer and wife-and-muse Diane – are branded to speak to women.

Note to Charleston’s culinary aficionados: The city’s rise in foodie fame has as much to do with superstars like Darryl as it does with big wigs in white hats. Darryl is a food-and-bev fixture in town: a 13-year front-of-house veteran of the former Mary Ann’s on Meeting Street, then a 17-year stint bartending at Vickery’s (where he earned “Best of Charleston” honors four times over), and now back to the linen-napkin scene at Halls Chop House, where Darryl keeps diners happy and fine food flowing. “I love being around people. It gives me energy,” says the master waiter with an easy smile.

Sometimes it’s not only what you know, but who you know. In Alan’s case, it was a happy mix of the two that landed him a coveted spot at the Ars Sutoria School for Design and Pattern Making in Milan, Italy. “The actual manufacturing [of my handbags] is the traditional Italian way. What I’ve done is added my designs and used their methods,” he says.

Antonio Daza dances to his own rhythm.

"Where I come from, if you don't dance, you're a geek," says Antonio Daza, co-owner of Daza Dance Ballroom Academy in Alpharetta. Born in Venezuela, this accomplished ballroom dancer started dancing in classes at age 6 but says he and his friends "came out of the womb dancing. It was just part of our culture."

Being from a third world country, Antonio admits that "it's funny that with all of our problems, poverty and corruption, we're a very happy people. We dance, we're around our families and friends and we like to get together." His exuberance and joy is evident as soon as you meet him.

As a young man, Antonia was studying graphic design as a career, but it was the movie Dance With Me about a Cuban man who moves to America and becomes a ballroom dancer, that changed his life. "When I saw that, I knew I wanted to do it too," he says. "I wanted to come here for something better."

Cliff Springs lives in the ‘reel’ world.

Since he was a kid, Cliff enjoyed telling stories—especially if he could both illustrate them with images and articulate them with words. As a high school freshman, he decided to combine his love of writing and visuals to tell stories with film; once he’d made the decision to follow filmmaking as a career, there was no turning back. “I like the bigger than life aspect of filmmaking,” he says. His company, Genesis Studios, is a full-service marketing, film, and production company, and his new baby, Emergent Films, was created to encourage more filmmaking in South Carolina while helping train and retain film talent in the state. “We want to see more things coming out of South Carolina from a filmmaking standpoint,” says Cliff. Emergent Films will produce one feature film and one to three short film projects each year—shooting begins this month for the first feature-length work, a Hitchcockian thriller shot entirely on-set at Genesis Studios’ new studio.

What’s your favorite thing about wearing a skirt? “It was fun to do something that I would have no reason to do otherwise.”

And your favorite thing about reading skirt!? “Finding out what women think and what appeals to women.”

Marty Hauser helps people be their best selves.

When folks hear the term matchmaker, they may have a certain limited definition in mind but for Marty Hauser, he sees the title as much broader: helping people identify the best matches for them, personal or professional.

“I bring out the best in people and help them manage what they need to have their challenges met–from appearance to mindset to identifying goals or outcomes –  so they’re ready when the right opportunity, business or personal, comes along.

Marty grew up on Davis Islands and says he’s been doing this line of work his whole life – he simply didn’t have a name for it or charged for it back then. But he says he’s always had a natural talent for helping people achieve their best, whether as an image consultant, or personal trainer, and most recently, by helping people develop strategies to know what’s right and not right for them in their careers or love lives.

He refers to himself as a matchmaker and relationship coach and uses a number of assessments, personality profiles, his certified hypnosis training and other tools to bring greater clarity to his client through personalized solutions.

As founder of Action Video Productions, Thomas has been wowing us with his film projects for the past 25 years. Inspired by “can do” people and his daughters Haley, Taylor & Sadie (Hay, Tay & Say for short), this productive perfectionist is now poised to launch another venture, Zebra Dazzle. “Zebras are unique—no two are alike—and a group of zebras is called a dazzle,” Thomas explains. “We are a group of uniquely creative artists who have come together to dazzle our clients with our creative marketing services.”

What do you love about skirt magazine? “Starting with its unique shape, paper stock, brilliant colors, creative layout, professional photography and the excellent copywriting I give it an A+. And I should know. Creative is what I do for a living!”

How do you feel wearing a skirt? “All my life my views have been about fairness, equality and diversity, so being the free spirit that I am, I think it’s only fitting that I have my turn at wearing a skirt.”

Cameron Kent takes the Road less traveled.

Veteran news anchor and reporter for WXII 12, Cameron Kent is no stranger to storytelling. He’s written screenplays for NBC, HBO, Lifetime and the American Film Institute, as well as two crime/thriller/suspense novels. But on this, the debut of his third novel, The Road to Devotion, Cameron has taken a leap: into historical fiction and his feminine side. “They always say write what you know, and writing about two women during the Civil War is nothing I know anything about. It was a radical departure but I just felt like it was the best way to tell this story.” And the story is this: two women, Sarah, a landowner, and Jacquerie, a runaway slave from Louisiana, develop an abiding friendship and cause Sarah to challenge a lifetime of spoon-fed ethics. “This book has been different because everything [else] I’ve ever written has been to entertain, and I wanted to say something, I wanted to express something about my world view.”

Duy Huynh brings dreams to life.

“It feels like I’m in a different state when I’m painting,” says Duy. His art, immediately recognizable for its dreamy, contemplative quality, often features poetic portrayals of traveling people or animals. “I try to leave as much room as possible for [the viewer’s] own interpretation,” says Duy. He draws inspiration from music, comic books, and folklore, as well as his childhood as a Vietnamese immigrant living in California and Carolina. But Duy doesn’t just influence the Queen City’s artsy tastes with his own work; as co-owner (with Sandy Snead) of Lark & Key Gallery, in NoDa and South End, he presents a well-curated selection of artwork and handcrafted items for sale.

What’s your favorite thing about wearing a skirt? “Once you see the pictures Deborah took it’ll be pretty obvious: I have some pretty amazing legs.”

And your favorite thing about reading skirt!? “You can probably tell by my work; I like to stay in touch with my feminine side. It does a good job of celebrating women’s culture.”

Rob Jones knows who’s hiring.

Rob has truly reinvented his career. As an archaeologist, his early career was spent digging up artifacts—and now, as president of SavannahJobs.com, he digs up jobs instead. Although it may seem like his two professions are opposites, he draws many similarities between the two. “I feel that I’m good at trouble-shooting problems, and I relate that back to archaeology,” he says. “With technology, things are changing all the time. There’s always something new to learn.” In fact, Rob’s life is a study in constant adaption all around; as the father of four children (an eight-year-old and five-year-old triplets), balancing his career with his home life keeps him busy. “Having triplets five years ago; that’s really changed my life, our lives, changed our priorities,” he says. “It’s great. It was very hard when they were little, just the logistics. But now, they’re so much fun.”

What’s your favorite thing about wearing a skirt? “When I first met my wife, we went to a Halloween party together and dressed as each other. So it reminds me of when I first met my wife. I dressed in one of her skirts for that party.”

Cyrus Buffum keeps things flowing

As the founder, visionary and chief water boy of Charleston Waterkeeper, Cyrus doesn’t mind getting his feet wet.
The Cape Cod native spent the last year and a half working to establish the local chapter of this international waterway watchdog group, and now he’s ready to take action. The mission: to protect and measurably improve the quality of Charleston’s harbors, rivers, waterways, creeks and estuaries—where we work, play, fish, swim, and get literal and spiritual sustenance. “The waterways are my playground,” says the former College of Charleston sailor. “I take it personally when they are degraded.” He hopes to align with innovative partners in the effort to protect our liquid gold, and
currently Cyrus is reviewing all the DHEC permits for each of the 40-some industries that discharge waste into our watershed. “We want polluters to know that we, as Waterkeepers and citizens, demand compliance to protect our natural resources.”

The best thing about wearing a skirt? “The ease with which I can slip my boots on and off.”
His favorite thing about reading skirt!? “I like feeling like a spy. I read it to gain insight into women.”

Dr. Jay Ganji is going red.

It’s a typical day for Dr. Ganji, who this morning ended a patient’s three years of leg pain and difficulty walking by removing a blockage in his leg. “The effect is instantaneous, and I’m going to see that with my own eyes, and that gives me a lot of pleasure,” says the cardiologist with Southeastern Heart and Vascular Center, who has been interested in heart disease since the age of 15 when his father became a heart patient. His passion for heart health brought him to the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign, which aims to raise awareness about the No. 1 killer of women. He advises women to be physically active, eat fruits that have an edible skin and not to overlook the warning signs of heart disease, such as shortness of breath. “When we can diagnosis it early, then the treatment is much simpler than when we diagnose it late.”

What do you like about wearing a skirt? “Like a hint of mint, it makes me cool.”

What do you like about reading skirt? “It’s about women and discusses women’s issues, and I’m happy to be a part of it.”

Mike “Kingsized” Geier is going to be huge!

At 6 foot 8 inches, Mike Geier is a big boy. But more importantly, he’s got a big booming voice. The singer and musician plays with several incarnations of his band Kingsized, around Atlanta. Kingsized does jazz standards, Frank Sinatra-crooner style songs and can sometimes be found in front of a big band set up or just as a trio at Martinis at Imax. Mike also performs with them for the Elvis Tribute show he does at Variety Playhouse twice a year and his big holiday show in December. Then, there is his wacky-party-style band Tongo Hiti, which plays at Trader Vic's every Thursday night. "We play the music we love," says Mike. "We want to play everything, and we can," he adds with a chuckle. "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. But we do."

Big Ron Hunter plays the red-bank, squirrel-scratchin’ blues.

You won’t be able to watch Big Ron Hunter pick a three-chord blues line without a smile spreading across your face. And when he starts frammin’, an old saying for the type of rhythm opposite of picking, be prepared for an all-out cheese. Ron’s father taught him to play the blues when he was just a boy. “My daddy used to tell me, ‘Quit frammin’ and pick!,” he said. Thankfully, Ron didn’t listen. The local blues musician that trained under the legendary Guitar Gabriel gravitates to another sound, one that is uniquely his. He describes it as “red-bank, squirrel-scratchin’ blues,” a rhythm he grew up with and one he lives with even now. “I can still hear it going on out in my backyard,” he said. Ron’s most recent record, The Great Unknown, was released in 2009 through the Music Maker label. He’s traveled to Europe, and played in Paris, France, Luxembourg, and Belgium with other Music Maker artists. Recently cutting loose his day job, he now plays music full time.

What do you like about reading skirt!?: “I’m a picture person and I like seeing all the familiar faces.”

Ian Sanchez is a natural teacher

Wearing a skirt is second nature to Ian, as long as it’s a kayak spray skirt. The outdoorsy director of the Lowcountry Environmental Education Program (LEEP) uses kayaks, hikes, marshy excursions and all things creepy and crawly to teach kids about the natural world. “It’s amazing how many local kids have never even seen the beach,” says Ian, a Californian who joined LEEP in 1999. By teaching students outdoors, Ian works to break a cycle. “We can pick up trash in marshes all day long,” he notes, “but it’ll just reappear unless we teach people to care, and people don’t care about something unless they experience it.” A musician by training and teacher by choice, he’s also an advocate (lobbying for improved environmental educational opportunities statewide) and movie star—his 2008 adventure kayaking from the SC mountains to the sea is chronicled in the ETV documentary, Web of Water.

The best thing about wearing a skirt? “Being able to move around easily au naturel.”
His favorite thing about reading skirt!? “It teaches me that women are the true movers and shakers in Charleston.”

Will Gillespie makes it a family affair.

Will knew he’d stumbled onto something good when he heard about Zoe’s Kitchen, a restaurant chain that makes everything on its menu from scratch, every day. “That’s something I really love about Zoe’s,” says Will. About to graduate from college, Will knew he wanted to work for himself, and decided to bring the Zoe’s concept to his hometown: His first location opened April 2007.

Since then, he’s hired almost his entire family to work for him—his brother, sister, mother, and grandparents all work at Zoe’s—and it’s gone so well that Will recently opened a second location downtown. “I think it’s
strengthened our relationships, for sure,” Will says. He works hard to strengthen his community, too: In addition to coaching basketball for his high school alma mater, Will offers discounts to military personnel, and makes it a priority to donate to local charities, churches, and schools.

“If you own a business and if you’re supported by the community, I think you’re obligated to give back,” he says.

What’s your favorite thing about wearing a skirt? “Air flow. The circulation. I don’t know, I just felt sexy in it.”

Buck Drummond is living the life.

Buck left L.A. for Savannah almost two years ago, and so far it hasn’t disappointed. He’s a veterinarian at Central Animal Hospital three days a week, and on his “off” days, he spends his time on his other career—the arts. Buck is an abstract artist, musician, and actor, and says living in Savannah has allowed him to find a way to dabble in all of the things he loves.

“I was drawn (to Savannah) by the reputation of SCAD, but also finding out that the whole town is sort of filled with creative people,” he says. “A lot of the things that I didn’t like about L.A. are corrected by moving to Savannah. I know my neighbors. I live very close to everything I do. I absolutely adored living in L.A., but it was time for something different.”

What’s your favorite thing about wearing a skirt? “I’m not sure. I think you girls have it over us guys in terms of clothing freedom.”

And your favorite thing about reading skirt!? “I don’t want this to sound negative, but I was surprised to find it so much more than a women’s magazine. I was really impressed with the way it was laid out. I like the large format; I like the kind of anything-goes subject matter and topics. I found it quite inspiring.”

Dany Eason connects people.

Dany is so active in events and organizations all over Charlotte that he’s been dubbed the “unofficial” mayor of Charlotte. “I’m a community guy,” he laughs.

It’s hard to imagine when he has time to sleep, though—in addition to his day job as the director of strategic marketing for JSW Media Group, he founded his own company, DEPR, an Internet-based marketing company, to help connect people on his own time. The married father of four and Virginia Beach native is also one of the brains behind Amped 4 a Cure, a nonprofit organization that raises money for research into all types of cancer through a series of benefit concerts. And when he’s not working on one of those projects, or busy being Dad, he’s working with Boys Talk, a program through Community Charter School, where he encourages older students to mentor their younger counterparts.

“This is my give back,” says Dany. “I really love what I do.”

What’s your favorite thing about wearing a skirt? “It’s an interesting experience. You can’t go wrong with black.”
