How I Became A Miser

When we were engaged to be married, back in the halcyon days of early 2001, my husband and I participated in an elaborate mating ritual that has taken hold deep within American culture. We registered for gifts. Daily cutlery, heavy silver forks, All-Clad pots in several different sizes, formal china for all those state dinners we would be serving, gravy boats, nesting mixing bowls and a much-longed-for salad spinner that retailed for $25.99. Among this orgy of conspicuous consumption was a set of everyday dinnerware from Villeroy and Boch.

Have you ever heard the story of the person who got the game winning monopoly piece off his McDonald’s cup and anonymously mailed it to a Children’s Hospital?  Forgoing millions, he/she gave without asking for any type of credit or appreciation.  The act of giving itself was enough for him/her.

I'm reading Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridian" on the stairmaster this morning at the gym, this beautifully, terrifying, horrific story about "the kid" and his journey through the south during the 1850s and the horrifying acts that took place during that time on the Mexico-Texas border.

I must be old school when it comes to music videos! I love the sound of Lady GaGa and I love her outrageous outfits, and her powerful lyrics that hit home but that last music video that I just watched on her website “Telephone – (Official Explicit Version) featuring Beyonce’ was way over the top for me! She really does ‘push the envelope’ when it comes to society’s acceptance of what is tolerable on America

I think I'm in love with you. Always on time, you arrive with the added pleasure of late sleeping and spare time to linger in pajamas over a cup of piping hot coffee. I particularly enjoy welcoming your weekly arrival by creating a hearty homemade breakfast while I tune into the Phantom Gourmet and TV Diner. Without the added "tomorrow is Monday" stress that your pal Sunday morning brings, Saturday morning, I just wanted to thank you for being you.

Love always,
Your biggest fan

It's scary being alone at night.

Every bump you hear is something out to get you. Something changes when the lights go off, almost like the darkness is a license for all things bad to happen. It's amazing how much difference turning on the light makes. The only problem with the lights is that they keep me awake all night.

Fickle Fortunes

The palm reader giggled as he ran a finger over my hand. “You’ll be poor and you’ll be rich, but you’ll always be bad with money. Fortunately, you’ll also always have someone to take care of you.” I rolled my eyes. I just wasn’t that kind of girl.

up a plan to volunteer your time in The Love Kitchen. Twin sisters Helen Ashe and Ellen Turner started the kitchen in 1986 and have been dishing out love to those in need ever since. The kitchen opens on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8:30am. Visit thelovekitchen.org to learn more about how you can help.

I remember when I fell off my pedestal.  It was not too long after my second child was born.  When my husband and I were newlyweds we often talked excitedly about how we wanted to raise our children.  We read lots of books and said, “oh yes, this is how we want to do it!” or “oh, we’ll never do that to our kids!”  We would sit in restaurants and sneer at parents who couldn’t control their kids.  We would say “if only they would say or do X, their kids wouldn’t act like that; when we have our kids it’ll be differe

Right now, I'm watching a documentary on E! about Spring Break.  I would say that I'm sure you remember this 'ritual' during your college years, but considering the amount of alcohol some of us consumed, you very well may not.  :) This show is about tragedies that have happened during this week of debauchery, which reminds me of my own 'good times'.

On the drive home last night, as was inevitable, I found something to annoy me. The bumper sticker on the car next to me read “Who Rescued Who?” printed over a paw print.

“Who rescued WHOM?” I growled out my window. The driver, understandably, jumped and threw me a wide-eyed expression—as if this had never happened to him before.

Do you catch your kids sneaking books to school, reading after bedtime, or walking while reading?

If so, whaddya reading this post for?  You don't need these tips - go read something else.  But if you struggle to get your kids to read, carry on.

If the experience of raising 3 book lovers is any indication, this stuff works:

My mom was tired of hearing me whine about not being able to drink red wine in public, so she bought me these Wine Wipes. Don’t tell her I told you so, but they work magic. winewipes.com.

Tips

We were waitresses, all of us, with different stash spots for tips. Mine was a tattered old envelope in my underwear drawer. I kept the amount written on the front, scratched out and rewritten over and over, to keep myself in the know and to protect from unlikely thievery.

My children have dentist appointments on Monday. I know this. I am planning on it. I did not need a reminder phone call. And, I’m not really sure I got one.

It’s my favorite time of year again! Girl Scouts are hitting the streets to sling cookies and I’m ready to buy! I LOVE every variety, from Thin Mints to Samoas to Do-si-dos.

I’d rather run barefoot and blindfolded over a snake-infested field than go shopping for a new computer. Buying a new car is less stressful. Doing your taxes is less mentally exhausting. At least you get money back in the end if you’ve done them right.

Several thoughts bounce around my head this morning. First, who are you Murray State, and what have you done to Vandy? Washington, why did I underestimate you? I shouldn’t have scratched you. Haven’t I learned always to go with my instinct? Ohio, well done! Perhaps my brother, a junior at OU, will get to experience your run to the Elite Eight just like I did when Davidson made it in 2008. This is no season like March Madness season.

I normally never recycle blogs, but I just had to on this one. I wrote it the day I brought Bella, my pup, home, so it holds a special place in my heart. I hope you enjoy!

September 22, 2006

Today is the first day with my new puppy. She's passed out cold right now, which is why I have the opportunity to write this. Something tells me she'll be asleep for at least another hour. Cause that's just what they do...they sleep.

Move over Dr. Phil! Our very own Life Coaches Elizabeth and Laurie hit Internet airwaves every Monday at noon, EST.  Self-described "Coaches on the Edge" they are Life Coaching's finest - peppered with humor, sliced with sarcasm, tainted with truth and they are able to leap tall buildings in heels. Come and hear them rant and rave. They promise they won't bite!
