Laurie: I can’t believe it’s time to haul out that big folder with all the crumpled receipts and attempt to make some sense out of the mess. First, we curse. We curse because last year around this time we swore that we would neatly file all these pesky pieces of paper in a proper order. Failure # 1.

Last weekend I finally got my hands on the blessed liquid of Southern legend: homespun Moonshine. I tipped the elegant glass jug full of clear corn liquor into a glass with ice and cracked my knuckles before digging in. The verdict? Strange, delicious, nostalgic in a weird way. I'm a Scotch girl and I like to feel the fire as it flows down. Moonshine is a

"The man with a new idea is a crank until the new idea succeeds."~~Mark Twain

Have you ever wondered who the folks were who invented post-it notes, white-out tape, and voicemail?  Neither have I, but I want to honor them anyway.  I can't remember what life was like before these modern little conveniences.

Three years, he said. Sometime within the next three years, he’ll be leaving.

“You’re going?” I asked him. His eyes – confused – looked into mine, the image of panic.

From the time I understood what marriage was, I vowed that I would NEVER change my last name if and when I got married.  In fact, a few of my boyfriends broke up with me just because I insisted that if we ever got married I would keep my last name.  I didn't care though.  I "stayed the course."

My husband and I like to stay in special places when we travel.  Well, I guess it would be more accurate to say that I like to stay in special places when we travel.  Mark isn’t particularly aesthetically oriented.  We’re talking about a man who didn’t notice that we’d had the entire interior of our condo painted until two weeks later.  Lucky for me, he loves me and is happy to indulge this passion of mine.<

People think that the Twilight series is only for teeny boppers.  I myself read Twilight, the first in the series, on an airplane on my way to St. Thomas and the day before.  I finished the book in two days because I was so enthralled with the story.

I rented the movie, "Precious" yesterday.  Wonderful performances by Mo'Nique and Gabby Sidibe. I had a couple of friends say that they could not watch it as it was too hard. I thought about not renting it, but then I knew that from the previews the performances looked quite powerful and I didn't want to miss them. It was difficult to watch and made me jump a couple of times (if you've seen it, you know what I'm talking about).

I haven't written anything personal lately because I've sort of put my personal thoughts on the backburner these last two weeks as I started several new jobs and this book challenge, but today, and for the last couple days, I've been sort of a flighty space cadet trying to get my thoughts in order.

So here, in no particular order are things I'm thinking about today:

I went to see a movie today with my daughter and her boyfriend. That's an awesome thing in itself, because we all love each other and have fun doing things together, but that's not the point of my blog today. The point is that Daughter and I were delighted by "Repo Men," with its over-the-top premise and loving, lingering shots of spurting blood and human organ removal.

Friends,

When you go to sleep tonight, you're not guaranteed to wake up tomorrow, and if you do wake up, you're not promised to see the next day. If you love someone don't just say it, show them you love them often. Many people leave this earth not knowing the full extent of how much they were loved.

I'm staring at a lovely purple plant on my counter right now. It's so cute and little. I adore it...

Especially because I beat some old lady out of it last night at the reception.

It was being held for some friends of the family, and there were centerpieces galore. Truth be told, that was my first experience in the "race for centerpieces." I'm suspecting it's strictly a female sport? There's just this certain instinct that kicks in when they announce "the centerpieces are free," and all Hell quickly breaks lose.

It's Week 9, Day 3 of my blog experiment and, I have to say, my intuition seems to go awry when it comes to medicine. There have been more than a few situations when I thought I knew the source of a sore throat or the cause of a cough, only to find out I was completely wrong, especially with my kids. "He has croup" turned out to be strep throat. "She just has a bad cold" turned out to be a double ear infection. Children aren't the best communicators when it comes to what ails them.

What an amazing day.. I couldn't believe it when I stepped outside this morning!  It was the first time that the car thermometer read a higher outside temperature than inside temperature this year..  Amazing.

We definitely took advantage of it.. After cooking breakfast for the whole bunch, I packed the kids in the stroller and headed off for a little run.. I must admit that my legs are a little out of shape.. I guess that commuting to work 9 miles each way on a bike doesn't really translate too well into running fitness...

A friend of mine was recently cast as a mermaid in a production of Peter Pan.  During the audition process she was worried because the mermaids were supposed to be sexy and seductive.  To her, seductive mermaid equaled boobs and long hair.  She’s hella adorable and definitely sexy, but as a petite yoga instructor with a pixie cut, she’s not the busty bombshell.

The title should be singular. I only met one vampire, one virgin and one “president” at MI 6 last night, but it just doesn’t flow the same. Go ahead give it a try…. I’ll wait. See, no good. I’m sure you’ll forgive my shameless attempt to draw readers in =) and the smiley face too.

Like Oprah Winfrey, I have been many sizes. Anywhere from a size 6 to a size 20. I have struggled with my weight when I have allowed myself to live life without being totally engaged. When I am in retreat mode and emotionally turtle into myself, I find that is when I start to pack on the weight and have to sausage myself into my clothes. At the moment I find it interesting that I have unintentionally lost 10lbs, because I don't feel totally engaged with all areas of my life.

I'm reading Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridian" on the stairmaster this morning at the gym, this beautifully, terrifying, horrific story about "the kid" and his journey through the south during the 1850s and the horrifying acts that took place during that time on the Mexico-Texas border.

Have you ever heard the story of the person who got the game winning monopoly piece off his McDonald’s cup and anonymously mailed it to a Children’s Hospital?  Forgoing millions, he/she gave without asking for any type of credit or appreciation.  The act of giving itself was enough for him/her.

There are so many things to figure out, I can hardly identify a beginning point. Did you have a miserable childhood? O, what  relief--I did too. You say your mom died before you reached puberty? Um hum. Got that. Your sister died in early middle-age, the one you meant to live with into your old age, to walk around the town with, holding hands and speaking cheerfully to strangers? Yeah, I hear you. Father and step-mother abandoned you when you reached eighteen (making your child negative-two-months, but still an entitity to be reckoned with)? Um, yes.

It's scary being alone at night.

Every bump you hear is something out to get you. Something changes when the lights go off, almost like the darkness is a license for all things bad to happen. It's amazing how much difference turning on the light makes. The only problem with the lights is that they keep me awake all night.

I think I'm in love with you. Always on time, you arrive with the added pleasure of late sleeping and spare time to linger in pajamas over a cup of piping hot coffee. I particularly enjoy welcoming your weekly arrival by creating a hearty homemade breakfast while I tune into the Phantom Gourmet and TV Diner. Without the added "tomorrow is Monday" stress that your pal Sunday morning brings, Saturday morning, I just wanted to thank you for being you.

Love always,
Your biggest fan

It's been so long here, and I was barely here to begin with, that it seems oddly delightful and a bit unfamiliar be back--like wearing the pair of gorgeous navy blue stilettoes that I own and have only worn once.

This time I hope I'll be sticking around and making a fairly regular habit of sharing things with you...

I remember when I fell off my pedestal.  It was not too long after my second child was born.  When my husband and I were newlyweds we often talked excitedly about how we wanted to raise our children.  We read lots of books and said, “oh yes, this is how we want to do it!” or “oh, we’ll never do that to our kids!”  We would sit in restaurants and sneer at parents who couldn’t control their kids.  We would say “if only they would say or do X, their kids wouldn’t act like that; when we have our kids it’ll be differe

I must be old school when it comes to music videos! I love the sound of Lady GaGa and I love her outrageous outfits, and her powerful lyrics that hit home but that last music video that I just watched on her website “Telephone – (Official Explicit Version) featuring Beyonce’ was way over the top for me! She really does ‘push the envelope’ when it comes to society’s acceptance of what is tolerable on America

Today, I became a Skirt!Setter.

It happened while I was at work typing number after number into a dull grey computer screen. I sent in my application while sitting in my small, quiet cubicle (which is almost as grey as the computer screen). And I waited in full anticipation until, alas, I saw the news. And, as I suspected, when I received the “Congratulations!” e-mail from Skirt!, all I wanted to do was walk out of the office and hole up in a comfy corner with a hot cup of caffeinated something, and write all of my thoughts on paper.
