Brittany Fletcher

Interviewed by Logan Moses, skirt!Athens

Brittany Fletcher/ Entrepreneur/Sister

Owning a business is a tremendous accomplishment for any person, especially if you are only 19 years old.

Brittany Fletcher was born and raised in Athens, GA. She discovered her passion for baking while in home economics class at Cedar Shoals High School, where she graduated in 2008. This passion aided in Brittany’s decision to purchase Black Forest Bakery & Deli with her grandparents when she found out the business was soon going to be sold. As for co-owning the bakery with her loving grandparents, Brittany laughed, “I pretty much dragged them into it.”

This extraordinary 19 year old is not just the owner but also a key ingredient in the Black Forest’s everyday routine. “I just hired someone new to help with the donuts. It’s been a big help not having to do it alone,” Brittany said of the task she’s being doing since she was just a part time worker. Although Brittany considers herself to be normal young woman, she realizes she has more responsibility then most girls her age.

When Brittany isn’t waking up at 3 am to clock into the bakery, she can usually be found watching her favorite movies and spending time with her family. “I am a very family-oriented person,” Brittany said. When asked about her passions, Brittany replied, “Being a sister is a strong passion of mine.” She is one of five children in her family and is the only girl. Brittany has been inspired a great deal by her family and particularly by her father, who is also a business owner.

In the next year, the bakery owners and employees hope to expand the walls and enlarge the working and serving space a great deal. Adding some new treats to the Black Forest menu is another goal Brittany is working toward. Brittany’s current plan is to stay in Athens and keep improving the Black Forest Bakery & Deli in everyway she can. When asked where she sees herself in ten years, Brittany replied, “Hopefully I’ll have a family and be able to bring my children here since I want this bakery to stay in my family.”
