Catherine Harris: Art Therapist
By Anna Mullins, Friday, March 5, 2010As someone with competing interests in counseling and art education, Catherine Harris was pretty thrilled to learn the field of art therapy existed. Many people may think art therapy is an odd job, but only because they’ve never heard of it. “I spend a lot of time explaining to people what I do,” Catherine confesses with a smile. She now has her own practice in Memphis, using art work in service of others. There is a therapeutic, calming aspect to making art, and then the art piece can lead to deeper conversation. “My patients have so much to share. It’s amazing to see what comes out after we work together.” She now specializes in older adults, particularly those who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. The artwork helps them reminisce and regain memories they couldn’t find through words alone. “Art stimulates a different part of the brain. With every session, it’s a different way of expressing yourself.”
