Magic Carpet Prayers

I have been free falling for 5 months now since leaving my life in Traverse City, MI and moving to Winston-Salem to live in community with 5 (now 6) other friends.  I have said to some that I am, "walking in the dark." Brennen Manning (author of The Ragamuffin Gospel) quotes his grandmother in saying, "To live without risk is to risk not living" - all these challenges require a willingness to risk a journey into the unknown and a readiness to trust God even in the darkness. Helen Keller says that life is a daring adventure or nothing at all.  Risk for the sake of risk is narcissistic.  However, as again Brennen Manning writes, "But when the appropriate time comes, only the disciple with an unflinching trust in God will dare to risk.  And risk is not naive; it knows that the possibility of making a mistake and getting hurt is very real."

This journey has not been void of migraines, arguments, days in bed & tears of defeat.  My roommate Julia and I usually end up on the "magic carpet" in our bathroom offering prayers to Heaven where for a while I was convinced that God had indeed shut off his miracle ear.  Funny, but not really.

My roommate Sarah, I call her "Scribe" reminded me that Jews have always believed that the plans of God are held in Heaven waiting to be realized on earth.  So you ask, "Shea, why the theology lesson today?" Yesterday I was offered a job.  I was thrilled.  So thrilled in fact that when my phone rang again and another job offer came I was speechless.   The Scribe said to me, "See the plans of God waiting in Heaven.  God can give you 5 jobs if he wants to."  As tradition holds in our house we gathered in the living room.  We held hands in a circle, had a moment of silence.  Then burst into laughter and screams of excitement as we skipped in a circle.  This is how we celebrate.  Then we write the blessings of God on our "Remember" board in the kitchen.  I'm excited to announce that I have accepted a position with the River Run Film Festival until May.  The Festival starts on April 15, my birthday.  Happy 30th to me!  I hope to see the ladies of Skirt! there :)  I'm not an expert on trusting God, just a witness.  I hope that my account gives you hope for whatever you're waiting for today.  It's true, we are not alone.

In the words of the fifteenth-century theologian Angelius Silesius,
"If God stopped thinking of me, he would cease to exist."
