Not All Heroes Wear a Uniform
By SFC Gillespie, Friday, January 9, 2009, 2 commentsClouds do have silver linings, and when a silvered cloud passes across a bright sunset, the scene can be awe-inspiring and emotionally uplifting without parallel to past experiences. No, I’m not overstating what has taken place this week.
I was frustrated, exhausted and felt betrayed by the military service which I had dedicated myself over the past year, and on and off since 1971. I could not seem to acquire a DD214 for my service over the last year, a right and requirement. I had come to the point of contacting the Army Reserve’s Inspector General (IG).
Yesterday, I’m sure after being contacted by the IG, I received a call-back from the main individual responsible for issuing this form. He said that I could have it completed locally. All I had to do is find a person locally who was authorized and qualified to do this.
After 6 or 7 calls, I locked into a lady who not only had the knowledge and authority to help me, but was willing to run a fine tooth comb through my 35 year-old records and note needed corrections. SHE WILL DO THIS ON HER OWN TIME – ON SATURDAY! I’m entirely bowled over and feel extremely blessed.
I’m so used to dealing with folks who do a good job, but no more, and too willing to do less. To meet a person who is willing to go far beyond just a “good job,” not only do I feel blessed, but I feel a need to place an extra snap to my salute for this civilian hero.
Ma’am, allow me to show you my respect by following your example.
