AFRH - Who's Retired?
By SFC Gillespie, Saturday, August 16, 2008One of the gems I’ve neglected to share lately is just north of our nation’s Capitol Building –pass the National Shrine and tucked into a nest of graveyards and blue-collar residences. The Armed Forces Retirement home is a representation of these structures, yet not similar.
The main administration building has the architectural majesty of the National Shrine and the Capitol with similar missions. People employed in this marvel of architecture do the important work of policy and budgets for the AFRH residents. They project the needs of the people they serve, just as what is done in the Capitol and with the same amount of faith expressed in the National Shrine.
The residents of the AFRH come from all corners of the country. When they served in the military, they served the majority of their time as enlisted ranks E-1 through E-9. After serving in a wide variety of military jobs, they settled –some for a time, others for the rest of their lives, at the home on a hilltop overlooking a vast expanse of area history and development.
I’ve visited the home several times since January, mostly to visit two friends there who appear to be extremely happy with their decision to live at the home. The rooms are small, but the amenities and the people’s spirit are larger than life.
