True Blood Season Finale

10 Reasons Twilight Bites Compared to “True Blood”

Okay, so it’s no secret that our pop culture has been bitten by the fascination with vampires and other supernaturals. It’s been this way for several years now, and the obsession appears to be growing. In honor of “True Blood’s” third season finale, I compared its greatness with the mediocre-ness of Twilight. Don’t get me wrong, I watch both avidly, but I guess me and Snoop Dogg just see eye-to-eye; there’ just something about Sookie.

Hold on my beloved and avid book readers. Don’t stake me just yet because I speak strictly of the Twilight movies and the “True Blood” television series, not either one of the book series. Today I reflect on the visual medium and not the written word. While normally I would not dare compare the likes of a movie and a television series, I believe this is now necessary. After subjecting myself to the first three movies in the Twilight saga, mostly I have been left stumped and wondering: What is the big deal?  Whereas after being introduced to “True Blood” last year, I immediatelyknew that I was thirsty for more. Here I denote 10 reasons why.

1.   “True Blood’s” hottest bodies were never jailbait, so people have lusted on guilt free for three seasons now.

2.   Both Twilight and “True Blood” make you wait a substantial period between movies/series cycles; however, with Twilight you only get two hours and with “True Blood” you get 12 hours.

3.   It’s all about the math. You see, Twilight has but four novels, while the book series “True Blood” originates from has ten novels. This means our love affair with the movies are more than half way over, but for “True Blood”, we’ve only just begun.

4.   Steamy love scenes and a dash of violence. Since I am no longer a 13-year old girl, I feel it is my right to see these “grown-up” things. While Hollywood tries not to lose that under 17 crowd (aka their target audience, aka the money), HBO doesn’t have to cater to MPAA rating standards.

5.   “True Blood’s” lead female is a force to be reckoned with and has superpowers of her own. From what we have seen of Twilight’s Bella so far cinematically, she is little more than another damsel in distress.

6.   When the guys in “True Blood” are shirtless it makes sense because they are in Bon Temps, Louisiana. Forks, Washington is rather chilly for a half-naked plot—even for hot blooded werewolves.

7.   “True Blood” has an underlying message of accepting others even though they may not fit into the “cultural norm”. Twilight’s underlying message is the only 17 year old guy to ever truly love someone unconditionally, is really a 109 year old vampire.

8.    “True Blood’s” leading couple paints a slightly more realistic picture of a relationship’s complications. So far this season they’ve broken up a few times, once because Bill almost drank all of Sookie’s blood (You know, real stuff!). Bella and Edward break up because he doesn’t want to ever see her hurt. Yeah, right Ed; who are you trying to fool? Relationships are built on pissing each other off and making up. Get with the times old man.

9.   Bon Temps offers such an interesting cast of characters from the sassy cook Lafayette to the seemingly kind bar owner, Sam, who just happens to be a shape shifter with quite a mysterious past. Many of Forks young characters from the high school are purposely lame and dorky, reflecting the book. The interesting characters, like Edward’s family, are cut down due to time constraints.

10.   Every vampire story takes liberties with vampire lore. Yeah, yeah, in Twilight the vampires look like diamonds in the sun, but in “True Blood”, people can use vampire blood as a drug. No contest.

True Blood Season Finale

I am so with you on this!

I completely agree!  While I have read the books and seen all three Twilight movies, it just doesn't compared tot the awesomeness (ok, I know this isn't a word) of True Blood. I absolutely love this show!  I love the characters with all their different dynamics, Bill & Sookie with their ups & downs, most especially, that Sookie is not some helpess girl who needs rescuing at every turn, she can hold her one and has on more than one occasion.  One of these days I'm sure, I will pick up these books but for now, the show is more than enough.

The Books True Blood Are Based On

Yeah, I've decided not to read them either because I want to be surprised on the show. As a warning, I've heard mixed reactions to the book series. Some people have told me they're totally hysterical, while other people told me they were really bored with them.
