All I Ever Really Needed To Know I Learned From Daria

You're Standing On My Neck
La-la-la-la-la. Excuse me.

In 1997, Daria premiered on MTV in the wake of Beavis and Butt-head’s demise. In fact, it was on their show where audiences first met Daria in 1993. For five seasons, she brought a little justice to the world with her sharp tongue and dead-on, dry sense of humor. So, while Robert Fulghum believes all he ever needed to know he learned in kindergarten, I know the same from watching Daria. In celebration of MTV releasing her greatness to DVD, here are ten things she taught me about the world when I was only 12.

1.       How to be myself even if I don’t   fit in.
2.       True insight into the meaning of teen angst.
3.       How to spot and call out liars, opportunists and narcissists.
4.       That even adults, no, especially adults, can be dimwitted and   untrustworthy.
5.       How to navigate the never ending high school-like politics of life.
6.       How to be a grade A smart ass (yet still loveable).
7.       That being smart really is cool.
8.       How to express what’s on my mind even if it doesn’t conform to what everyone else around me thinks.
9.       That monotone voices, glasses and combat boots are super sexy.
10.   How to use my brain—instead of my body—to get what I want.
Truthfully, we all have a little Daria in us, which is why I think so many people can appreciate her. From time to time, we’re all a little unsure of ourselves and feel, no we know, we don’t fit in. What are we fitting into anyway? As this satirical show pointed out several times, obsession with your looks, fashion and popularity could quite possibly make you find yourself on the losing end of many situations.
