A racism pass for liberals?
By Sarita, Friday, December 17, 2010, 4 commentsThe other day I got an email from Frances Rice, the chairman of the National Black Republican Association.
Rice and Steele
She wrote: "Hello Sarita,
Below is a despicable, racist cartoon featuring Michael Steele. Liberal Democrats get away with this sort of vile racism."
She pasted a political cartoon by Jeff Danziger.
Here is a link. (Yeah, I'm going to let Huffington Post stick its bouncer-thick neck out, copyrightly speaking)
The cartoon is a reference to Steele’s controversial tenure at the head of the Republican fundraising organization, and the growing calls for him to step aside despite his announcement to run for re-election.
What do you make of it? Do you think liberals get a pass when it comes to racism?

Not Really...
I find the cartoon a refreshingly honest discussion on race relations, past and current. Every time someone tries to have an honest discussion about race, someone else cries racism.Instead of trying to correct the racism in one's own heart/party, the tendency is to point at someone else and say, "You do it, too!" Well, maybe they do. But that should be beside the point.
I totally agree with
I totally agree with flickchick. I do think that liberals (like me) get a pass sometimes because I do feel like we're the more inclusive welcoming party to all the minorities (including women). But you sometimes hear liberals say things like "I voted for Obama" in the same breath as "I've got a black friend" at cocktail parties and you just cringe. While that's not exactly racism it's a little insensitive. But yes, we cry racism A LOT lately and for everything. As long as it brings up discussion (which is what a political cartoon is supposed to do) I'm down for it.
I agree with Flickchick and
I agree with Flickchick and Steph. The historical laws enacted for minorities (including women), haven't changed the way some people think. Some liberals appear to be all inclusive, but still fall short. Some conservatives tend to hide behind religious beliefs when it comes to equal rights. As with most politics, there are issues on both sides. We've come a long way, but still have a long way to go.
What did you think of the cartoon?
I was hesitant to post it because I get all nervous about violating reproduction laws (I'll let Huffpo stick its thick neck out).
Check it out and let me know. It's definitely provocative.
