Everyone Has To Die, But Not Everyone Has To Die Going Over A Cliff On A Segway
By rozwarren, Thursday, September 30, 2010, 2 commentsI’m hoping to drop dead doing something totally unremarkable. Dusting the bookshelves. Walking the dog. When I go, it better not be ironic. Being dead is bad enough. I don’t want to be a punch line too.
The millionaire who owned the Segway company just died on a Segway. He drove it over a cliff. This is a very cartoon-ey way to die. A Wylie Coyote death. It’s also a perfect example of a stupid rich person’s death. A SRPD is when you die doing something that nobody with any sense would do, and that only a person with way too much money can afford to do. Any death resulting from diving off a yacht, for instance, is probably a SRPD. If you die while skiing, it isn’t necessarily a SRPD, but if you die while helicopter skiing, it undoubtedly is. A classic SRPD is that of John Denver, who died flying an “experimental aircraft“ into the Pacific Ocean.
When an ordinary person gets hit by a car or jumps off a bridge, it’s tragic. When the wealthy dude who owns Segway takes one out for a spin on a path overlooking the water near his palatial estate and manages to go over a cliff on it, that’s a SRPD.
Yes, the guy was a philanthropist. He used some of his wealth to make the world a better place. He’d just donated 1,000 segways to wounded American troops. He sounds like a pretty cool dude.
The way he died is still ridiculous.

Tragedy / Comedy
It has all the irony of an O. Henry story. I've thought more than once that I don't want to die sitting on the toilet with my pants around my ankles.
I hate to laugh at this, but
I hate to laugh at this, but what can I say "I LAUGH IN THE FACE OF DEATH!!!" (Did that sound tough or what?) You're right, I'd rather just go out in my sleep. I think falling off your own private helipad while trying to jump into your helicopter to jet off to your island would be a SRPD.
