Question of the day: Am I a feminist?

I don't think I've ever paid much attention to the feminism ideal. At least, not until I joined Skirt! and see it everywhere.

To me, the idea of the feminism I've heard all my life is antiquated. Striving for the right to vote. Joining the Army. Bra burning. It was all years, even decades, before I was born.

I never asked for the right to vote; it's something I took foregranted. Not "can I vote," but "will I vote?"

I like when a man opens a door for me, but if I get to the door and there's a man coming, I do the polite thing and hold it open for him.

I believe a man should still pay for a date if he does the asking. I believe a man should pursue a woman because I believe that a man is more fulfilled with a relationship if he feels like he put effort into making it happen. I believe that a man wants to be the knight in shining armor, and any man who says he's doesn't is just looking for an easy relationship and won't last long anyway.

I'm not married yet, but I believe I will balance working outside the home and raising a family. Being a journalist won't exactly require 9-5 all my life. I want to raise children. And I like cooking. But he can clean.

I don't think feminism is the issue in this decade. More and more, women are recieving equal pay and benefits. No, we're not all the way there yet, but we will be soon. The men and women of my generation have generally been raised with the same ideals, that everyone, men and women, black and white, Christian or Athiest, are equal, and those that don't believe that are the minority now.

So am I a feminist? I don't think so, for I don't think my generation has such a thing.

Question of the day: Am I a feminist?

Interesting post

I enjoyed it. I have wrestled with the concept of feminism myself, because, of the ones that are still around, I am often not accepted as part of that group, I guess because of my slightly to the right politics, stay at home mom status, and belief in certain types of gender in-equality, like your aforementioned policy on dating! :) But oh well, maybe the point is moot.

Anyway, thanks for posting!
