My New Virtual Buddies

Thursday, August, 28, 2008

Now that I’ve entered the age of twittering and texting a little bit (finally!) I decided to sign myself up to receive alerts. CNN breaking news alerts, various groovy pop culture blog updates, etc. And then of course, there are my new buddies – Barack Obama, Joe Biden and Michelle Obama.

I found it amusing a year or two ago when I signed up at AlGore.com and started receiving periodic shout-outs from my new buddy Al, but this... THIS is ridiculous. I’ve received over a half-dozen emails already from the prolific trio just this week alone! (Okay, now I’m not truly under the guise that these are ACTUALLY being written by Barack, Joe and Michelle themselves, but let me be excited in admittedly a child-like way that yes, there really is a tooth fairy.)

First Obama wrote me to personally share the news of his VP pick. He even called me friend. Then, Michelle wanted to introduce me to her family and tell her life story. Just to me! Now, VP Joe has joined the lovefest of me, their humble registered Dem voter, to thank me for welcoming him aboard the campaign train. Really, Joe, it was nothing.

This is the first presidential election for me that has been so tied to Web sites, email alerts and YouTube clips. I can only wonder: how will this virtual age impact the election? Based on the previous two results, I’m crossing my fingers and toes that it helps by reaching out to younger voters in a way they’ve never been appealed to before and that this carries tonight’s man of the hour to the White House.

Either that or we’ll have to figure out a way to reset the districts yet again, but this time to help our camp.

SO funny! I've been receiving all that good stuff too (Obama/Biden 2009!) and have wondered all the same things. I think, for the most part, this will be a positive thing for the election because, with many elections before today I've felt as though people walk into the ballet room, flip and coin and walk out with a half smile on their face - as if to say, "Well I voted, but I'm not sure if I helped." This year - the voters are informed - even when they really don't want to be! It's almost impossible to not know about the candidates and I imagine that is a great facet added to the campaign. I really think we'll have informed voters and less coin tossers this year - or that may be my wishful thinking :]
