She may not have garnered a medal in Beijing, but weightlifting champion Cheryl Haworth is always golden to us!
Though she placed a “disappointing” sixth in last week’s Olympic women’s superheavyweight competition, she displayed her characteristic good sportswomanship by offering kudos to gold medalist Jang Mi Ran of South Korea, who also broke three world records and lifted 107lbs more than the next finalist:
"She was incredible," Haworth said of Jang. "I knew from the start she would blow everybody away, and she didn't disappoint."
(You can check out Cheryl in May’s “Women of the World” issue – I do believe our photographer Angie Hopper has made the best artistic use to date of the giant globe on DeRenne.)
All are invited to welcome home this three-time Olympian at a covered-dish supper this Saturday. Here’s the deets:
When: 5pm – ? Saturday, August 30.
Where: Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 2021 Tennessee Ave., Savannah

Let's just start with lifting 107 pounds over your head at all. That's pretty incredible.
