The Heartbreak of a Parent

Sunday, August, 17, 2008

When you give birth to a tiny, beautiful human, you don’t realize it at the time because you can be so overwhelmed with different emotions but as they grow into the people they are to become, your heart swells with pride and you would give your life to keep safe, these people you’ve helped create.

They are your heart, only walking on legs outside in the world on your own.

The bitterest heartbreak is when the decisions they choose to act upon, will rip away every hope you had of them having a wonderful life. And as you look back on all the promise and hope of their future, and think back to all that you wished for them, you must grieve and mourn the loss.

The morals and ethics and lessons you taught: went unheeded.

The accomplishments and achievements they brought by their own deeds: are long forgotten in their minds.

And no matter of talking, pleading, crying, or reasoning can convince them to do the right thing.

And the bitterness of failure is only felt by you, the parent, as you watch them continue to throw away opportunity after opportunity and travel down a road that will  only lead to loss and ruin.

As mentioned in other comments, it's taken me days to work my way down the page and read all of the wonderful blogs of me sister-Skirters. I don't know exactly what you're going through - if this is about your experiences, or those of someone you know - but I can imagine how difficult it must be. Thinking of you and sending you lots of good wishes. xoxo

Wow! This was so beautifully written and so heartbreaking. My heart goes out to you or whoever this is about. I especially loved "They are your heart, only walking on legs outside in the world on your own." You have a gorgeous way with words...
