Conversations Overheard

While sitting at a neighborhood bookstore reading and sipping coffee, I overheard a ridiculous conversation, as I often do, between two friends at the table next to me. Usually, I am able to block out the extemporaneous noise of my surroundings, but when such noise is so completely absurd, I can’t help but cock my head a little to hear more clearly.

Among the many absurdities wafting my way,  I overheard one of the two women complaining about parking spaces at malls. In particular, she couldn’t believe that expectant mothers are now given parking spaces of their own. According to her own admission, she has never been pregnant and was not a doctor, but she insisted, regardless of her lack of experience professional or otherwise, such spaces are unnecessary. So unnecessary, in fact, she made it a practice to park in those spaces if no other reasonably close space is available or if she is in a hurry. Her reasoning for parking in these spaces: “pregnant women need exercise.”

Newsflash: So do you!

I think, in general, doctors orders for both the pregnant and non-pregnant, is exercise is good, even for you Ms. Talking-loud-in-a-bookstore-about-things-you-obviously-do-not-
understand.

Parking in a expectant mother spot is equivalent to parking in a handicapped spot. If you don’t need it, leave it for someone who does. “Being in a hurry” is not a sufficient need and neither is “I don’t want to walk that far.”

Of course, at the close of their conversation and following their eventual departure, I tried to recollect all the past conversations between myself and a friend at a coffee shop or bookstore and worried about what absurdities coming from my mouth were unintentionally entertaining those around me.

I believe that the young woman you were overhearing my face a rude awakening if she thinks that it is too much effort to walk from the distant spots at a mall parking lot now. Just wait until she is faced with the task while her feet and ankles are swollen to the size of grapefruits and she is carrying 40 surplus pounds and a bowling ball under her miniskirt. People that self focused are sincerely amusing in their complete lack of understanding and regard for another's perspective in life. I can speak from experience to say that if intelligent and conscientious, as we skirt readers are, our conversations overheard at coffee shops may not be intended for all ears, but are only intertaining in the astounding wit and veracity that they contain, rather than because of overrreaching volume or assumption.

It sure is cool and necessary, one must walk a mile in someone else's mocassins, ocassionally...particularly while swollen...too bad there was no parking as such when I was preggers...years ago... angelia
