Your August Muse

Friday, August, 1, 2008

Not that I believe in Fortune Cookies, BUT, what’s this all about?  I get a fortune cookie at lunch today and I carry it around in my purse for the whole afternoon and evening.  I finally open it and eat it tonight at almost 11:30 at night and what does it say?

“Something wonderful is about to happ”

That’s it. Just “happ,” nothing else. What’s up with that?  Did the fortune cookie change its mind?  Like it was going to tell me that something wonderful was going to happen, but decided, “nah!”. WHAT???

How hilarious!!

Well, I’m going to be your Muse for August and frankly, I’m a little apprehensive about the challenge.  I know that I’m not expected to blog every single day, but I do feel that when I blog it should be something of substance.

So what do I have to say of substance today, on my first day as Muse?

Tomorrow is my 20 year class reunion and yes, I’m going.  I was on the pre-planning committee and even though we used a reunion planning company, we still e-mailed back and forth ideas for extra things we thought would make the night memorable.

As I was thinking of my 20 year class reunion I remembered the time when my eldest sister went to her 20 year reunion. I remember that at my twenty-one years of age she seemed SO MUCH OLDER than me. She was so excited about going to her reunion because she had lost so much weight and she was possibly smaller than she had been her senior year.

As I thought about this I realized it. She was only THIRTY EIGHT years old. The age I am right now.  She was forty-two when she passed away from cancer only three years later. She was only three years older than I am now and that idea just blows my mind away.

Funny how much our perspective changes as we get older. So as we attend our five year, ten year, twenty year (or more) reunions this summer let’s keep things in perspective. And let’s be thankful that we are still here.

That is big stuff: your reunion, your sister's passing, realizing your own mortality. Way to start off the month with a bang! Sounds like you have a lot to explore this month, Muse.

As things go, I just wrote an article about a local reunion group-- classes from the 60s from two seperate (and once rival) schools get together each year at the beach. The ladies I spoke with for the article have lots of great ideas and advice (some of which is included in the article).

Go, have a great time, feel blessed to have the day... I'm sure you're sister would want you to!

I loved your story! I told friends about these two classes last night at my reunion. We had a great time! Everything turned out great.

I've been finding myself lately having the same experience! I'm finding myself relating to my mother, my aunt and other women mentors in my life more and more. It's so weird looking from the outside in when you are young and then living the same experiences from the inside out when you're older. Looking forward to your musings this month!

Thank you for sharing! It's interesting how we see things differently as we get older. I hope I don't disappoint!
