Help! I was born in the wrong century.
Although I must say I rather enjoy having Facebook and Google at my fingertips and I couldn’t live without my Blackberry, I am envious of the glamorousness of the 1950s.
On my days off I am plastered to the small screen watching my new favorite channel, Turner Classic Movies. As a writer, I draw great inspiration from the leading ladies and their luscious beaus.
Yes at times they were insane (see any Elizabeth Taylor film). But they were also very strong willed and oy! the fashion. The gowns, the oversized jewelry, the hats, the hair—all timeless. I am tired of wearing shirts with necks down to my belly button or skirts up to my hoo-ha. There used to be a sense of dignity in fashion, that rarely exists among youth today. I also must admit that there are very few movies today that can hold a candle to the masterpieces of that time period, even with HD. Of course then to be a successful actress you had to be a singer/dancer/actor/comedian.
The raw emotion that can be seen in some of these films transports me to another time and before I know it I am blubbering (especially “Imitation of Life”). Every film leaves me with a sense of disappointment. Why couldn’t I have been born during a time of letters instead of e-mails, stage plays instead of DVDs, champagne instead of beer and sophisticated luxury instead of trashy ignorance? I envy these women who were poised, talented and most importantly loved.
If you had a time machine, when would you land?

Dear crazy-smart sassy intern, Jessica: We need people like you to keep that glamour alive. Can you imagine Cary Grant wearing a baseball hat and talking on a cell phone in a restaurant? Don't think so. Glad we've got people like you watching out for the good stuff.

You always did talk about being wisked off to the 50's era; poodle skirts and big hair. You have an old soul, so do I; it's not a bad thing. I like that old-timey swing jazz too. That time period had... substance.
If I had a time machine, I'd visit the 70's. Blues and Funk! Earth, Wind, and Fire! Blazin' like the final element in their name! Whew! You know I love music.
Nice reading you stuff, Lauren. Glad to see you doin it real extra-large..
