The Newberry Opera House has been named America’s outstanding historic theater of the year.
The opera house was built in the French Gothic style and first opened in 1881. After a total renovation, it reopened in 1998. It’s one of those wonderful old buildings that’s found new life, staging more than 200 performances a year and keeping downtown Newberry busy.
One of my favorite aspects is the variety: one night you might see a Russian ballet, the next an Elvis impersonator. Speaking of which, Rick Wade and the Sassy Brass Show Band will present a salute to Elvis there tomorrow (Saturday) night. For a complete calendar of upcoming performances, look here.
