Any regrets?

Tuesday, July, 22, 2008

Nikki Hardin, the publisher of skirt!, and I were recently talking about issue theme ideas for next year and I threw out the idea of Regrets Only. I proposed that the entire issue could be about regrets and what you wish you had or hadn’t done in your life up to this point. Then over the weekend, I got the video below sent to me. Take a look.

What a strange coincidence, right? There must be something floating in the air. Here are a few of the things I would’ve added to the list:

1. Telling my mom the first spanking didn’t even hurt.

2. Eating 8 deviled eggs in one sitting.

3. Seeing Garfield in theaters.

4. Crying in front of my male bosses.

5. Not flossing enough.

What do you regret?

I regret: Not going to Law School. Not living in the Sorority house in college. That I stopped training for triathlons. Waited so long to terminiate low performers and bad attitudes. Picked the office in Buckhead, what a commute!

. . .having harsh words with my brother. . . .giving my dog, Karl, to another family so I could go live on a sailboat with my (ex)husband. . . .not leaving my (ex)husband sooner. It would've been better for the *both* of us. . . .making decisions based on what the men in my life want vs. what I wanted. :) But I don't dwell too much on any of those things, or else I'll be regretting all that time I spent regretting when I could've been out doing something that made me happy! Regret, like jealousy = a wasted emotion.

How about an issue on "mistakes" you don't regret? Happy accidents? Seeming disasters that made all the difference? Too optimisto? teaworthy

I'm with teaworthy. There isn't anything to be done about the past besides accepting the consequences or rewards and learning. Mistakes, luck, serendipity, good decisions and bad have led to the life I live today-- which is a good life. There's no time for regret; life is much too short to get lost in the past. I agree. I could have done things differently but then I wouldn't have learned the lesson nor would I be who I am today. Besides, who's to say that if I redid it and it wasn't a regret, I wouldn't do it and regret it in the future?!

OOh, I like that. Mistakes I don't regret have been hindsight 20/20 kind of moments. I love optimisto. Not getting promoted at my last job, got me the job of my dreams. Things not working out with my last boyfriend led me to the greatest relationship I've ever been in. Happy accidents and serendipity can make all the difference. Stephanie Editor of skirt! Atlanta

My father died 10 years ago. His sister died a few years later. My brother died last year. My mother has Alzheimer's. I'm writing a memoir and have many gaps in memory, and I regret not having asked lots of questions to the only people who knew the answers, while they were still living or in their right mind. There was so much dysfunction that I didn't want to go there, but now I think it would have helped me heal. I'm pouring through photo albums and old letters, but oh, how I wish I could reach back through time.... http://wwwpenandpalette-susancushman.blogspot.com/

I regret not listening to my mother more often. I also regret not having the courage to admit to my mother that I should listen to her more often. I also regret 2 of my three tattoos. Oh and regret having both my ears pierced 5xs all the way to the top (I was in the 10th grade). "Fashion fades, only style remains the same." - CoCo Chanel

My mom would love to hear that i regret not listening to her more often. And it's true. She's usually right. Moms carry so much wisdom. But sometimes you have to mess up on your own so you TRULY learn your lessons. Stephanie Editor of skirt! Atlanta

I regret I didn't spend more time with my fabulous daughter because I was too busy making a career for myself. Now I wish I had those days back; However, she is a great adult and I love every minute I spend with her. Love Mom

I do have regrets believe me, but I don't like to talk about them because I know I shouldn't live my life with regrets. Everything that has happened to me, however good or bad, has happened for a good reason and I'm moving on.
