Superstitious Undies

Friday, July, 18, 2008

My kooky friend Casey has an even kookier brother named Kevin. Recently Casey was promoted from a manager to a district manager at work. Yay Girl Power! (This is good news, but also neccessary information for you to know for the story.)

Today Kevin called her up and said, “Hey Case! Did anything good happen to you today?”

And she replied, “I don’t know. Nothing out of the ordinary good, I guess. Why?”

And Kevin said, “Well, I usually don’t wear underwear, but I wore underwear on the day you got your promotion. So I was thinking they were lucky underwear. And I wore underwear today and I was hoping something good happened to you, so it would prove my theory correct.”

She said, “Nope. But I didn’t wear underwear today and I usually do, so maybe I cancelled your underwear out.”

Ha. Love it. Often I find myself much like a baseball player, holding onto superstitions and rituals that may or may not change the course of my day. If something good happened to me while I was wearing a lucky suit, or singing a certain tune, then the next time I need for something to go well for me, I’ll wear the same suit and sing the same tune. Hoping that by reenacting the previous good luck, I will bring it around again. Am I nuts?

What are your superstitions and rituals?

Gotta love families and the bizarre ways we find to support each other. I can't totally knock it though. In high school, I would set aside a pair of offensively bright aqua- marine socks to pair with my Episcopal school uniform for big days. Not sure how much luck they ever brought me but people certainly noticed them! Glad I outgrew that, actually.
