I'm a tired, worn-out mother of three young children. I never really fully appreciated what being sleep deprived was like before my children--and I now believe it is a valid form of torture. I live on Long Island with my husband (who I rant about frequently) and three little angels. ;)...

Why Is The Beach So Easy?

Friday, June, 20, 2008

We went to the beach last weekend.  We live on Long Island and are literally surrounded by water.  The north shore is about 1/4 mile away from our house (totally walk-able) and the south shore is about 20ish miles from our house.  LI, at its widest point is about 25 miles.  The north shore borders the Long Island Sound--it's really beautiful but the beach itself is pretty rocky.  My understanding is that it has something to do with a glacier that landed here.  As Kramer would say, it sounds like kooky-talk to me.

The South Shore borders the Atlantic Ocean.  Our waves are not huge here, but they are decent and provide a lot of fun for the kids.  While it's very cool to belong to a private beach club on the north shore, there are not as many kids there to play with--and that can make it boring for the kids.  (And if they're bored, I don't get to sit in my chair).

We went to Smith Point last weekend.  Smith Point is also known for the TWA flight 800 memorial.  If you go Smith Point, you should take a few minutes to see the memorial--it's beautiful.

It was the most relaxing time I had had in a very long time.  The most work I had was walking my sons up to the bathrooms. And even the water wasn't cold. Before we left, I bought a season pass and proclaimed that we would be there all summer.  The kids thought it sounded like a plan too.

I recently sent a photo to a writer, Jen A. Miller, I know through a professional writer's group called, Freelance Success.  Jen latest book is, “The Jersey Shore, Atlantic City to Cape May: Great Destinations: A Complete Guide.”  She asked for retro-photos of people on the jersey shore.  My mother was a total beach bum so I knew I had photos (we even have photos from the winter time too).  I sent her one to share on her blog of me at the age of 2 or 3 on Long Branch beach in NJ.   My older brother saw it and told me that he remembered the time that photo was taken.  It was the summer we spent two weeks in a small beach rental above a shoe store.  He said that my mother and aunt would take us to the beach by 9am and we were the last to leave each day.

That must be why I'm against putting a pool in my yard.  I'm not saying I could write a check and do it--but I have no desire to do it.  (But  don't mind using my friend's pools from time to time).  ;)  My kids should be at the beach--it would be wrong to not go to the beach.  They should experience what I did--everything except for the sun burn.  Making friends for the day with strangers, digging deep holes with your bare hands,  the fun of finding sand crabs, jumping in waves, sand in your lunch, and the feeling of utter fatigue on the ride home. THAT is a good childhood memory.

That is a GREAT childhood memory. We spent our summers on the SC coast, and I still enjoy nothing more than I do a day in the sand, though with a beer this time around...Food from coolers, the sleep that comes after a day like that..Good, good stuff! By the way, the fam and I will be at your house next weekend. After that, if you have a hankerin' for Southern BBQ..... :)

You know, I'm not really sure what southern BBQ is. I've always been kind of reluctant because of the movie Fried Green Tomatoes. Don't they kill some guy and then put him in it? That's not what you normally do with your victims is it? We tend to just throw people in the Hudson around here. ;) Anyway, you come right on up here... if you know how to work a blender (ahem.. make margaritas) you're welcome to stay as long as you like. ;)

I was much more fortunate than I realized to have grow up on the shore of Lake Michigan. As a kid I went to the beach literally every day in the summer which was about 1,000 feet away from our front door. I still have dreams about the cool breezes, soft sand and seagulls squawks waking me up from taking a nap in the sun. My mom would make us bologna sandwiches with ketchup and real butter and we would go buy Cokes for a quarter at the State park concession stands. It was a wonderful time where uncontrollable laughter and fun was a ritual and probably taken for granted. We didn't have a care in the world and thought the whole joint belonged to us. Thanks for the memory today!

Thanks for your comment. You literally made me smile. And, I've been in a foul mood from a recent back injury. I knew it wasn't just me.. beach days are too awesome. It's nice to look back and think, "those were some good times."

I'm so jealous you live that close to the coast. We're heading to the outer banks of North Carolina tomorrow for our annual "beach vacay"...and I can't wait. It's the one vacation of the year that's just my husband, me and the kids. No other family, no other stresses. And there's IS something so mesmerizing about sitting in a chair staring at the ocean. It's my time to recharge, dream, set goals, and enjoy the smell of salt air and even stinky marsh! xoxo tcb www.thatcoolbroad.com

My SIL, who lives in Greenville NC, says the same thing to me all the time--she's jealous. It's comments like that which help me remember how lucky I am. One thing that is cool is going there at sunset. It's so funny to me how everyone stops whatever they're doing, waits and watches the sun go down into the water, and then goes on about their business. Enjoy your beach vacay!!!!

Earlier this week I spent a wonderful day on the beach at the Isle of Palms here in SC. A trip to the beach always reminds me of growing up on Long Island. My dad called me his beach baby because I was always the first one into the water and the last one out. We usually went to Robert Moses State Park. When I was younger we went with our parents first thing in the morning while it was still cool-to avoid the crowds and so we we wouldn't have to pay for parking. As a teenager my friends and I frequented field 2, that was the place to see and be seen! If we couldn't get a ride we would walk to Good Samaritan Hospital on Montauk Hwy in West Islip and load up on an overcrowded bus-it cost $1 back then. What is summer without the perfume of coppertone mixed with the salty tang of the atlantic, plus the magic of hunting for shells, sea glass and driftwood? The only thing missing from my trip to the beach were the vendors and their styrofoam coolers calling out, "ice cold coke-a-colas, ital-ian ices, and chip-wiches!"

hahahaha.. your post made me laugh. We used to do Robert Moses all the time but that's when we were in Smithtown. We're further east now, so we do Smith's point. I haven't seen any Styrofoam vendors here yet. Smith's is a county park instead of state like robert moses. I can't tell you how many times someone selling either chip-wiches or sodas has sat down quickly on our towels pretending to be "with" us as "the man" walks by. Then they get up like nothing happened and keep yelling it out. I haven't seen anyone with jewelry yet either.. hmm... are they outlawed in smith's point? I actually totally forgot about those guys... :)
