The Girl Effect

Learn  - –  Change  - – Share

http://www.girleffect.org  is an amazing site that visually shows how powerful social and economic change can happen when girls have the opportunity to participate in their society.

Consider this:

  • Research in developing countries has shown the children of educated women are healthier, and more likely to be in school themselves.
  • An extra year of primary school raises a girl’s lifetime wages by 10 – 20%.
  • A woman or girl will reinvest 90% of her income into her family.  A man will reinvest 30 – 40%.
  • An extra year of secondary school raises a girl’s lifetime wages by 15 – 25%.
  • For every development dollar spent, girls receive less than one half of one cent.
  • When girls have received 7 or more years of education, they marry 4 years later and have 2.2 fewer children.

Wow--that income spending difference between men and women is eye-opening. I swear, women alone can sway the economy.~Sara

I've stumbled all over myself in my eagerness to add that link to myspace & Facebook. (Thank goodness for a teen daughter who has a clue about how to do all that, including creating my pages in the first place)! I'm preparing to help launch a teleconference program geared to giving girls (tween/teens) a daily place to speak their hearts, woes, challenges, frustrations, hopes... you've given me abundant and fresh inspiration!!! "Trust Life's unfolding..."
