I’m having a party next weekend. (Hurrah!) The theme is Love Shack. Hubby and I were laying in bed one night and as I listened to the B52’s song, I was in hysterics thinking about what fun we could have with a party of the same theme. Sorry, but you’re not invited. As it is, we’ll probably have the cops called. (Ooh, but our neighbors are moving to St. Thomas today...we can use their driveway for extra parking!) ANYWAY!
I’ve been thinking about other things to do for the party. Hubby has a disco ball which will be fun. I started getting into 60’s era “stuff”. Of course, you have to check Craigslist for stuff. When I put in 60’s, I got some stuff, mostly cars. Then I saw the word- retro. Ah! Search retro, suddenly I had a plethora of groovy offerings at significantly higher costs. Vintage? Same deal.
My neighbor grew up in a “snobby” Atlanta suburb. She has a house full of beautiful furniture and accessories, a good portion of which has come from her mom and other stuff that has come from shopping with her mom. And most of it comes from thrift stores and garage sales. Through years of knowing what to look for, she has solidly constructed, interesting furniture, beautiful serving dishes, and a creative, inexpensive solution for most home “disasters”. (Such as a broken patio tabletop...substitute mosaic from 25 cent coffee mugs. Fun project to do with kids!)
So here’s a weekend challenge. Take a tour through a garage sale or thrift store and really look at what’s laying around. Give it a first glance and make your judgements. (You know you will.) Then take a second look through the retro or vintage lens. You may not need it anymore than you did the first time, but you will probably appreciate it more.
Happy hunting!
