The Vajajay Trip

Monday, April, 14, 2008

On Tuesday, the vajajay trip (as I like to call it) began.

We spent our first night in Atlanta where we had a round table discussion at Charis Books and More with some amazing people. 100_0103.JPG I say people because it wasn’t just women.  I have to say that’s one of the things I found the most amazing on this trip, the men that were willing to speak to us and ask questions and just get involved. I mean, we all know women are amazing and inspiring, if you are like me you are surrounded by amazing women.  I think that can be said for the men in our lives as well, we just forget sometimes.

In Mobile, we ran into a couple of feminists of the male persuasion.  One was curious about feminism vs. feminists and there was also one who admitted he knew nothing feminism or feminists and simply became involved at first because he wanted to show support for his girlfriend and was now a changed man.

We finally made it to New Orleans at the end of the week.  We started out Saturday morning bright and early at the V to the Tenth Superlove Parade. I’ve never seen so much pink in one place!  At one point I looked to my right and Christine Lahti was standing right next to me.  What a sight to see and participate in too, the atmosphere was amazing!

Saturday night was the Vagina Monologues performance and it was nothing short of amazing.  Eve Ensler began the evening.  Everytime I hear her speak I find myself fighting back tears.  The monologues were delivered by a whole host of celebrities; Picture_30.pngKerry Washington, Rosario Dawson, Christine Lahti, Doris Roberts, Jane Fonda, Jennifer Beals just to name a few.  They were all amazing but Liz Mikel (who filled in for Oprah who couldn’t make it due to an illness) was simply phenomenal!!!!!  There was some musical talent there as well a few to name were; Jennifer Hudson, Charmaine Neville, Peter Buffett and Faith Hill.  I have to say t.v. doesn’t do justice to Faith Hill.  Not only does she look amazing but man can she sing!

Towards the end of the evening, Eve asked for women who had been abused to stand up in the safe place that had been created that evening.  The lady sitting next to me that I had been chatting with throughout the evening stood up, as did countless numbers in the arena.  I was astounded.  It really left me speechless, I’m not sure what to think or say about it… map_neworleans.jpg

The trip was amazing, the show was inspiring and after 6 days, 1783 miles and 4 and ½ hours of sleep I am home again!
