Prepare to be Offended
By jennymaxwell, Thursday, November 20, 2008You’ve got to believe that Bubba Cromer is having more fun than most of us. Today, he previews his new movie, The Hills Have Thighs, which he promises will offend everyone.
And you have to wonder how many former legislators go on to careers after politics like this one.
You may remember Bubba from skirt! in January this year, when he told us how he came to make his first film about Bigfoot.
I’m going to his screening today at The Nickelodeon, curious and a little nervous.
How will I be offended? In a way I can stomach? In a way that will make me groan out loud? Or in some way so disgusting I can’t even imagine?
From the looks of this trailer (view at your own risk; really, you might want to think twice) the answer is “all of the above”. Gracious.
I also wonder: is it good to ridicule everything or are there lines we shouldn’t cross? Is there an objective “in bad taste” standard? If everyone is fair game for jokes, does that make it okay? Should we be more like Bubba and just lighten up?
Screenings for the public begin on December 5 at The Nickelodeon.
PS (as in Post-Screening Update): I wasn’t offended at all, and I did laugh quite a lot during the full-length version of The Hills Have Thighs. In particular, I enjoyed hearing what Bubba had to say after the screening, how he’s been influenced by Flannery O’Connor and her appreciation for the mangled, messed up and absurd parts of life. (Note to O’Connor fans: Mr. Cromer pays tribute to Hulga, one of my favorite O’Connor characters.)
The World Premiere on December 5 & 6 will help raise money for The Nickelodeon’s new theater, if you need one more reason to go.
