I was 20 years old and taking my first photography class when I fell in love. It was a rocky romance in the beginning. He was complicated, too many buttons to push, meters to read, and no matter how hard I tried, I always read him wrong.
So for the sake of my sanity, I put our affair on ice and finished the class with Petri’s nemesis, a newer, dummy-proof, automaticSLR. Our relationship was cake.
And boring. That summer I went back to Petri, the manual, 35 mm my grandfather picked up when he was stationed in Vietnam. Luckily, Charlie understands our bond and hasn't insisted on parting us. It will be five years in January.
I love Petri for many reasons: the way his body fits my hands, his detachable light meter, the full, thick sound of his shutter when it clicks; the routine required time after time after time to make him work...
But mostly, I love Petri because he takes pictures like this:

And this...

And this...

Technically speaking, I’m no photographer. The physics and logistics, I don’t have down. But I know what I think is beautiful. And I know Petri.
When it comes to relationships, that’s all that really matters.

Sigh... you forgot to mention his WEIGHT, how the weight of him in your hands is heftier somehow, more authentic and solid, than the young stallions they make today. I have a 75-year-old Hasselblad and using it is, yes more complicated, but ahhh poetry in motion. Your images spoke to something deep within me that is only sated in the darkroom. "Trust Life's unfolding..."
