I am a spunky 25-year-old living in a suburb of Tampa. I was relocated here with my husband of 2 years from western North Carolina when the Air Force decided that we were needed in sunny Florida! I had almost all the best times of my life at Salem College in Winston-Salem, NC, the oldest women's c...

Happy List

Monday, October, 13, 2008

In college our resident assistants made us write up Happy Lists to put outside our room doors so everyone could get to know us better.  There were always a few misunderstandings, (like how I put “cows” on my list senior year because I like dairy products and don’t eat beef and somehow that got translated into “Sarah collects cows” and people started buying me things like stuffed cows and cow wind chimes and socks with cows on them), but overall, you really could learn a lot about someone just by knowing what made them happy.  The best thing was that, for the most part, what made us happy was really simple stuff.

They were just markers on posterboard (with occasional glitter glue because I was/am addicted and purchased it in multi-packs at Sam’s), so they didn’t last from one year to the next, but I kind of wish I had them now, to compare to each other and what I’m about to write.  It was my half-birthday on Thursday, (ie, 6 months after my last birthday and until my next one), and it got me to thinking about what I’d put on my Happy List now.

This allows me to contemplate a bit about myself, post a blog for today, and not think too hard about what I’m writing because it’s 2 minutes to 10, EDT.

I haven’t planned it, and like my Happy Lists of Yore and all my blogs, I’ll just write and see what my fingers come up with.

Happy List at 25 1/2

-Heinz 57 (ditto Worcestershire sauce)

-sparkly/shiny stuff, from diamonds to tin foil and back again

-HUBBY! (esp when he’s cute/funny/sweet and doesn’t mean to be)

-Jimmy the Incontrovertible Convertible Mustang (he has A/C, unlike Vinnie the Volvo)

-the weeks between Thanksgiving and Epiphany, esp the week before Christmas!

-not being sick (ironically, my only New Year’s resolution for 2008)

-making and keeping New Year’s resolutions

-cheap books at Sam’s (& 3 lb blocks of havarti with dill)

-standard time, (as opposed to daylight savings time, which is against nature)

-The Lizzie McGuire movie (because everyone wants romance in ROME!)

-my silicone contact lenses which are super-comfy

-oxygen (big, big fan of oxygen)

-jigsaw puzzles (but considering I haven’t finished the one I started 2 weeks ago, you might doubt this, but it’s just my touch of ADD showing)

-the Georgia Nicolson books by Louise Rennison (mindless but seriously funny & British, which is awesome)

-my fab relationship with my family

-CookOut fast-food restaurant (if you’ve never been, I pity you, they are only in NC and owned by one family, no franchises)

-Target (duh)

-stuff that’s on sale or that I have a coupon for

-Ann Taylor Loft pants (only company for which I can order them without trying them on and they FIT)

-ballet shoes (I really think I want another pair of these, just for the hell of it, so I can pirouette in my kitchen and just generally prance around on my tippy-toes)

-painting my toenails (once again, from the fact that I only do this semi-annually, you might doubt this)

-Delilah, my dysfunctional but loving, (like the radio program), laptop

-how my deltiods look after just 1 week of working them out

-Abuelita hot chocolate (it’s in the Mexican foods section of the grocery store- buy some, please)

-Granny Mae’s and Mom’s cooking

-learning, going to class, and school in general

-podcasts, esp Dr. Carlson’s Science Theater, anything from the BBC, A Prairie Home Companion, This American Life, and The Splendid Table

-snuggling with fuzzy things, even if it’s just towels hot from the dryer (ditto sheets from the dryer)

-Tommy Bahama perfume (remember how I said I huff air freshener at Target?  you should see me with perfume in the department store)

-green peas with dill

-key lime anything (pie, cheesecake, truffles, etc)

*it has just now occurred to me that an inordinately large number of these things that make me happy happen to be food-related; should probably be embarrassed by this, but I just can’t be bothered*

-magazines (currently get Martha Stewart Living, Everyday Food, Fitness, Self, and Hallmark, and did a survey today for Ann Taylor and they’re giving me O, Southern Accents, Better Homes and Gardens, and Real Simple for one year for free- I told Hubby and he’s so pleased that our daily mail will now weigh about 5 lbs)

-makeup (I’ve been coordinating my eyeliner to my clothes since 9th grade, but hardly ever wear it any more)

-HOOPS AND YOYO (I’ll be singing “Do You Like Waffles?” the whole rest of the evening now)

-yoga (no, really, I love yoga, just don’t do it often enough because downward dog makes me dizzy currently)

-music (here’s a sampling of what’s playing on my iTunes right now: I Just Wanna Make Love to You- Etta James, Horse Called Music- Willie Nelson, 40 Boys in 40 Nights- The Donnas, A Welsh Bird Song- Charlotte Church, Magic Carpet Ride- Steppenwolf, Lullabye- Billy Joel), I have pretty varied tastes

-baking (so satisfying to create good things to eat from inedible stuff like Crisco and flour)

-Arrested Development (best tv show, ever)

-my engagement ring (it’s not the Rock of Gibraltar, but it’s a gorgeous solitaire and perfect for me, and goes well with my borrowed wedding band, but that’s another story for my anniversary that’s coming up)

-soft toilet paper (I buy lots of store brand stuff, but I buy Charmin Ultra Soft because half the time I end up grabbing tp to blow my nose on and cheap stuff makes my nose raw)

-pumpkin (the color, the vegetable, the Starbucks bread with the candied pistachios on it...)

-ironing pretty leaves between sheets of wax paper (which I’ll do in NC if there’re still pretty leaves hanging around)

-Sadie Mae, the Wonder Bassett (whom I’ll see in NC and kiss her ears)

-Skirt! (one of the few sites I visit daily, next to Yahoo! mail and Facebook)

-the internet in general, for letting me stay in touch with family and friends super-cheap

-wearing cute/pretty underwear, even though somedays it’s only on under floppy clothes I can fall asleep in

-ending sentences with a preposition when I feel like it, becaue America is still that free

-electric dishwashers, (so I don’t have to be a human one)

-Agatha Christie mysteries (ditto Sherlock Holmes)

-that blue nail polish that I own but have never worn

-only having to shave my legs once a month and my underarms um, well, not since August, (thanks, chemo!)

-praying and meditating

That’s about it, for now.  There are probably hundreds more, as I’m pretty easy to please, but I’m tired and I’m going to take soaky bath with my L’Occitane shea butter organic lavender bath cream and go to sleep (a gift from my mother-in-law that makes me happy).  I’m freaking tired after a busy day of not much and can barely type now.  Nighters!

Love your list Sarah. Little things make me happy too...my very first sip of coffee in the morning, looking at my kitchen from where I sit with my laptop when it's CLEAN, how my den looks just after I vacuum it, eating Mexican food, having good seats at a great concert, snuggling with my kids and husband on a loveseat meant for 2 and watching a movie...yeah, I could go on and on (and trust me if I did much of it would be about food! Thanks for putting a smile on my face first thing in the morning!

Sarah, Lovely List! My favorite was "buying a new pair of ballet shoes so you can pirouette in the kitchen." This is a beautiful image. Thank you for the morning smile. :)

Sarah, I always love your blog and your spirit. I'd have to include fuzzy slippers, the Sunday sales ads, breakfast for dinner and my beautiful rose bush that blooms incessantly. Thanks for the reminder of how good life really is.
