I was pointing out that Starbucks lets you personalize a gift card for a friend. I happen to think that's pretty cool. I also give them props for offering health insurance to part-time employees. A friend of mine is able to keep his independent business open and running because he works a few evenings a week at Starbucks--otherwise health insurance as a small business owner would be prohibitively expensive. Chains aren't all bad, all the time. At skirt! we absolutely believe in bootstrap entrepreneurs (I was one myself) and independent businesses, and we support them all year long in our local print editions--just ask our advertisers. And we hope we they grow bigger and more successful so they can hire lots more people and offer them health insurance and 401K plans! Isn't that what we all hope for when we start a business? One of the proudest days of my life was when skirt! started making enough money to provide health care plans for my employees. Nikki
