Our skirt! editor, Nora Shoptaw, asked a great question in her blog, “Have you read a good book lately.” A question, I gather, many of us haven’t had posed in a long while.
Well, not only did I read a good book recently, but it's a book by a North Carolinian that Greensboro will soon be talking about!
The Pleasure Was Mine by Tommy Hays is about
changes thrust upon the Marshbanks family, some of them quite painful, some of them rather comical. The most significant is related to what most of us would like to avoid: aging. But that's
what makes the book so poignant and worth reading - it's real to what all of us face, whether indirectly or directly.
I like humor and Tommy Hays' main character, Prate, has a great
understated wit. Prate is married to Irene and their dialogue is
consistently filled with delightful repartee.
And Hays' characters handle difficulties with grace (some sooner than others) using them as a trajectory for growth.
The book has a lot of heart and soul and levity. Conveniently, it’s also a fast read!
The Greensboro Library sponsors One City, One Book. It’s an event so comprehensive that it happens only once every two years.
You won’t want to miss it.
And the best part? You can enjoy the festivities (most of them free) while connecting more deeply with your community. Think of this as the Oprah book club, only more local.
Check out this link for more information: One City, One Book Event.
Also pick up the News & Record on Sunday, October 6th for a One City, One Book informational tab featuring essays, testimonials and a detailed calendar of activities for adults and children.
Happy reading! Be sure to let skirt! readers know what you think!
