There have been several coming-of-age moments in the last few days, weeks, months and years that have sent me reeling into a slow realization that I am becoming.. duh. duh.duh... an adult. This weekend, I purchased my very first automobile (on my own) after applying for a fatty loan. I spoke with my insurance agent today, discussing my policy and coverage (for the first time without parental supervision). In some ways, this surge of independence is exhilirating. Part of me delights in knowing that I’ve embarked on the future that (with LOTS of help), I’ve shaped with my hands. I’m a big girl now!
But, my other half mourns. I handed over the keys of my first car to wide-eyed 16 year-old boy this weekend. My purchase was exciting, but it didn’t hold a candle to the first taste of FREEDOM that came with a liscense and my first set of wheels.
When I was in high school (before gas prices forced people into being stationary), I spent countless hours doing what I called “aimless driving.” Setting out alone in my beloved “danger ranger” truck in a random direction, rolling down the windows and turning up the song of the week, I drove until I was lost. It felt good to head in a direction without purpose. The liberation was intoxicating as I was driven by adventure.
Sometimes I think we get more caught up in what we’re driving then in what’s driving us.

I had a scary realization this weekend. I went to a friends 19th birthday and at first it was like woohoo! 19 yeah, and then it hit me... the next birthday was 20. TWENTY YEARS OLD. It's so crazy. I only have a short year and a half left before I'm old and decrepit. Okay, maybe not old and decrepit but my teenage years are leaving me at warp speed. but,
CONGRATS ON THE NEW CAR that's pretty exciting.

Oh, that's so exciting and so sad! And you're making me nostalgic for aimless driving trips. Those were my favorite way to spend time in high school and college.
