What an ASO!

Friday, September, 26, 2008

I went to opening night of The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra last night at Woodruff. I cocktailed with TJ Holmes from CNN, Mary Welch from Atlanta Woman and cutey Justin Grey from Fox 5. That’s always a good time, but I sat in my seat in the audotorium expecting to be snoozing within minutes like a regular blue hair.

No way.

After a spirited opening of the Star Spangled Banner, which was so enthusiastic in these trying times, I teared up with patriotism.

Robert Spano, our magnificent conductor, was so engaging up there (see that pure passion on his face!)  he made Brahms seem like a hit song by Justin Timberlake at the VMAs.

Young People of Atlanta listen up. Want the shock of all shocks?

The Symphony is cool.

I didn’t know that until last night. In fact, I took an empty seat near the edge of the auditorium, so I could sneak out if it was horrible. Instead, I fell comfortably back into my seat as I was swept away by the sweet lulling of Beethoven. It is a thing to be seen. And not just by the blue hairs, who are way hip to this stuff.

The ASO is a fantasic orchestra.

Their children's orchestra is also phenomenal. Once upon a time, when I was flute teacher to my two Lilburn-based goddaughters, we went to their holiday performance every December.

For anyone doubting the wonder of orchestras everywhere, give them a try; you'll be amazed at the power and emotion those world class musicians can emit from a little 'ol stage.

Hope you'll go back... and be sure to tell us all about it next time, too.
