My first experience with my jokester of a husband in a classroom setting just had to be childbirth class, where as you can imagine, the potential for his antics are endless. He’s your typical class clown, always thinking about how to crack everyone up and lighten the situation. Luckily, our teacher is up for it and thinks he’s as funny as the rest of us do.
Of course, he’s told me stories about his school days of spit balls, teacher pranks, writing his name on the chalkboard, his many visits to the principal’s office, detention, and even getting kicked out of school. While his jokes probably wouldn’t warrant us getting kicked out, he’s the class clown no doubt.
Ed hasn’t missed a single opportunity to share his humor with Pat and more than a dozen other expecting couples. When Pat discussed Nature’s Cleaning (in short, many women’s bowels naturally clear themselves before birth, i.e. diarrhea), Ed chimed in with “5001 diapers” (one more than the average total number Pat says you’ll change before your child is potty trained). In another class, Pat said that later in your third trimester, the doctor would begin regular vaginal exams to determine if your cervix was dilating. Ed commented on how much he hates vaginal exams. On our tour of the labor and delivery room, Pat turned on a light that she said the doctor would likely use towards the end of the birth. Ed pointed out that the light was right on the spot. And at the beginning of last class, Pat asked if anyone has an announcement. Ed raised his hand politely and said, “Our baby has fat cheeks.”
While it appears that Isabella does have plump cheeks, I don’t think this was the type of “news” Pat was inviting. But, as usual, Pat handled it perfectly and said, “Oh, did you just have a sonogram?”. Ed responded yes, told Pat our baby’s current weight and called Isabella a big Italian meatball. For someone (like me) who was always more of the teacher’s pet than the class clown, this is a new and admittedly more fun classroom experience!
