So my 26th birthday was this past Tuesday, September 23.
Do I feel any older? Sometimes. When I am sitting Indian style on the floor for longer then 10 minuets and I go to get up, it takes me a bit longer than normal to snap my legs into walk mode. I’m also noticing teeny spider veins on my legs, which I think is from crossing them, yuck! (I need to find a way to solve that problem.) And lastly, I am watching my younger cousins grow up before my very eyes. One of them is graduating from high school this year, and I remember holding him when he was an infant. Time does fly. And I’m realizing that the years go by faster the older we get.
But what never gets old about having a birthday is the gift factor.
I never really have expectations of much, and haven’t since the age of 16. But there is always something that exceeds those expectations and brings me to the realization that it truly is MY birthday. Someone in my life noticed that I’ve had the same pair of Rainbow sandals since college. I got a new pair, for my birthday! Another someone gave me a hand-made bracelet of intricately patterned, green beads. It is so me!
Then there’s cash. Which is always a nice gift. Even though I have a few major things I need to save money for like new brakes for my car, getting my wisdom teeth pulled (yes, I still have them!) and more contact lenses, I could not bear to spend birthday money on those things. So just after finishing our October deadline here at skirt! Charlotte, I decided to do some spending. Below are a few things I treated myself to, all of which were on sale. (I’m a bit of a bargain shopper!)
A fabulous green coat from Nordstrom,
a patterned rug from Urban Outfitters,
and dish towels that I will make into curtains from Anthro.

But lets get real for a second. Birthdays are not all about gifts. And surely, I know that. I have to remember to be thankful I am even having a birthday, year after year. Thankful for the fact that I am healthy and have my daily needs at my fingertips. Thankful that I even have friends and family to bless me with birthday wishes. And thankful for the fact that my birthday is in the fall, during a season of transition.
Happy (belated) Birthday to me!
