Bed Rest

Thursday, September, 18, 2008

So far, it’s not been so bad. I know it sounds miserable. But really I was so miserable before, I’m actually quite thankful to be at home.

No, nothing’s wrong with the baby. Actually, bed rest was prescribed mostly for my own comfort. I don’t want to whine about my back again. To sum it up, I have two bulging discs from a prior back injury. During the last few weeks, I was in so much pain and my blood pressure was rising. But if you’re curious and would like more info, check out my blog titled Two Bulging Discs & a Bulging Belly and that should explain things.

What have I been doing? Working. Luckily, I work for and with such awesome, understanding women and they’ve allowed me to work from home until the baby’s born. So now my laptop is a permanent fixture with me on the couch or in the bed and I sit down at my desk only when I need to be online (my laptop doesn’t take too well to wireless-she’s an old girl, but she still works great!) or plugged up to the printer.

Although I miss the girls in the office so much (we’re more like sisters than co-workers), I get my fix with several phone conversations with them daily. And I have to admit that working in pajama pants is oh-so-nice!

I haven’t been too sad about my situation until I realized that this weekend is the Arts in the Heart of Augusta Festival. Since I’ve been with skirt!, this event has been my thing. For the last two years, I was on the steering committee as the VIP Chairperson. I decorated the VIP tent, organized volunteers for the three day festival and planned the Thursday night VIP party. This year I stepped down…somehow I knew that decorating a large tent from a ladder, moving tables, arranging flowers (with my  mom and aunt), greeting volunteers and explaining their duties for three shifts a day, and being dressed in heels solely in charge of an exclusive event probably wouldn’t be doable at 32 weeks pregnant. And I was right!

But I have to admit that I’m feeling a little upset that I can’t participate in any of the excitement this weekend. No t-shirt, no exotic food from the ethnic village, no jewelry, paintings, or trinkets from the vendors, no performances from the global stage, and no Brenda (Durant) hugging me when it’s all over and saying great job and I’ll see ya soon to plan for next year?!

Well, enough about me and my bed rest woes…If you’re in town this weekend and not confined to the house, I suggest you go to Arts in the Heart. And please have a beer at the beer garden and some baklava for me!
