I am a tremendous fan of all things witty. If you are funny, you are likely my friend. I would leave my husband for Jon Stewart, Keith Urban or Sawyer from "Lost" and he's well aware of it. I am happiest writing and raising four kids (yet I'd trade any or all of them for great shoes). ...

The Name Game

Thursday, September, 4, 2008

Go ahead, call me shallow (ha -- like you’d be the first) but all this stuff about Sarah Palin’s daughter has got me thinking one thing:  I LOVE her name --  Bristol.  Even better:  her baby-daddy’s name, Levi.  (I’m not loving calling a tiny baby Trig, but maybe in a couple of decades that’ll sound good in say, a saloon or gas station or something).

I LOVE really cool names.  I LOVE my kids’ names:  Jake, Carson (my gal), Luke & Trevor.  I never wanted them to be a double in their classrooms.  I didn’t want them to have duplicate names of anyone for that matter.   I’ll admit it borders on ridiculous:  I’d almost chosen the name Kendall for my daughter when I discovered an old high school friend of mine -- who I didn’t even talk to anymore -- had just named her new baby girl that -- hundreds of miles away.  I scrapped that.

I’m glad I did because she’s typically the only Carson in the classroom.  School.  Town.  State.  Well, maybe in the Northeast.  When we moved to North Carolina, it turns out there were four -- FOUR -- other Carsons in our neighborhood alone.  We didn’t last long in the south.  See ya.

When my husband’s cousin’s wife boldly announced at MY SON LUKE’S BAPTISM that she intended to call her unborn child (due in weeks)  Luke,  I thought she was kidding.  “You can’t do that,” I said furiously.  Not only would they share the same first name but -- hello -- they’d share the same last name as well. Born in the same year.   Was she a moron -- or just evil?

She sure showed me: she used the name all right.

It’s been nine years and I haven’t spoken to her since.

Have I mentioned I can be a bit shallow?

Tina, I like cool names too. We had chosen Chandler (even if he had been a girl) before we conceived and BEFORE friends came out (boy were we pissed when we say the 1st show - we both screamed at the TV "That's our name!) Surpringly there aren't many Chandlers around because if you ask me that's one awesome name. Our daughter is Marley and I fear many Marley's will be coming into the world with the popularity of the book "Marley and Me" but at least our Marley will be older than all of them. Their only complaint is that there are never any key chains or coffee mugs with their names on them at theme parks. (Yeah, I had the same problem growing up.) But really, Bristol? Bristol?!? It sounds like she was conceived at a race track. (There that's me being catty rather than shallow.)

I love the name Marley! What's worse: not-so-cool-and-actually-silly celebrity names: Apple, Honor, Sunday.... Puh-leeze....

Thanks! I still really dig that name too. But yeah, celebrity names - what up with that? (You know Honor will be On Her in high school - thanks for that mom and dad!) My favorite celebrity name of all time is Fifi Trixibelle (one of Bob Geldoff's many weird named daughters) I mean c'mon what is she? A dog?!? In a parallel life I'd like to marry a Spaniard (Antonio Banderas will do)and have a daughter named Pilar and then move to France (can't think of a French hottie offhand, will just have to keep Antonio - sorry Melaine) and have a son named Henri (pronounced the French way.) Now those are some cool names!

My brother's son, for 3 years, was Alexander to us. Then, during a rare visit, I was thrown because he and his wife kept referring to this little blonde-headed kid as "Carson." ("Um... isn't that Alexander?" I kept thinking.) They had decided to start calling him by his middle name!! Gotta admit I like Carson way better... :-) "Trust Life's unfolding..."

I like Bristol. It reminds me of ships and sailing. Trig? Eeeeek. Not digging it so much. And I had to laugh right out loud when I read that there were no Carson's in your neighborhood when you first named her. Hysterical. I was like "Oh. . .she must not be from down here." And then I read about your North Carolina experience. . .(giggle)I LOVE the name Carson - but it is a name that is used around here (as you discovered!) Names are such a personal thing. I don't even HAVE children, but neither of my sisters are "allowed" to use my baby names. How weird is that? Ha ha ha! xoxo

I kind of like Bristol, too...It reminds me of paintbrushes, hehe. The bristle? I don't know. Trig is unique. I don't think I'd choose it for my child (he probably wouldn't be nearly cool enough to live up to that name), but it sounds like it would be a cool character name in modern fiction. Haha, I hope my sis doesn't name her kids the same as mine (I don't have any yet). That would be really funny. Sort of. Okay, not really. ~Sara

I have friends/sisters who "claimed" their baby names before they were even married! :)

When I was in high school, one of the most gorgeous girls in our class (luckily for her!) was named Dayann. Her last name, I kid you not, was Knight. "Trust Life's unfolding..."
