Fever Pitch

I literally jumped when I got the email. The jump must've disturbed the slumber of my boyfriend, Brian, who was lying half-asleep on the bed watching ESPN. His eyes darted over to where I sat in front of the computer.
"What?"
I tried to play it cool...like I always do to no avail since he knows me too well. I looked back at him coolly, leaned back in the chair and sighed non-chalantly.
"Oh, well, nothing. I just got this email from one of the jobs I applied to about 2 weeks ago," I said smoothly.
He was looking at ESPN again. I half-smiled and then turned back to the computer, but I continued talking in a boring tone:
"Yeah, the lady wants to do a phone interview."
I didn't turn around, but I heard the curiousity in his voice.
"Oh? Well that's good, then...now, who is this for?"
I smiled. Yes! I still had the subtle hint skill single girls seem to lose once they get a steady boyfriend.
"It's an internship for <bleep>!" (Obviously, NOT a curse word, but I don't need to jinx the little bit of luck that came my way because it got lost on the way to fulfilling someone else's dreams!)
He started showing more interest, like a fisherman who had seen a jerk in the water at the end of the fishing line.
"Oh, wow. That's awesome! I'm so happy for you."
I nodded in agreement, but I was leaping inside. This was a major deal since I haven't had one call, interview or interested email in 6 months! I beamed from excitement and hope. After so long feeling like a generic brand applying against fancy labels everywhere, FINALLY I had been interesting to someone with the power to make my dreams come true. Even if nothing comes of it, at least it proves two things:
1. There is no typo on my resume
AND, just as importantly....
2. I win, ESPN!
