Squirrel Hunting
By MAPetty, Tuesday, January 26, 2010My twelve year old likes to hunt. He has spent as many days as possible this hunting season in the woods. Thankfully, the season ended last month. Now I won’t be nearly as broke or nearly as lonely. Oh, who am I fooling? All three guys will still find something else to do besides spend time at home with me…..
I have to say that he had a good season this year. He shot a deer and a bobcat (yes, it was legal at the time he shot it) and several squirrels. You should see him hunt squirrels. It is really something else, almost something that you would imagine R doing instead of L (twelve year old).
He skulks around the yard; rifle in hand, ready to shoot at a moment’s notice. It’s kind of funny to watch, because he will stand there and wait for a squirrel to come around and then he sights his rifle in on the squirrel and before you expect it, he pulls the trigger.
Boom!
Now I know that there are a bunch of people out there, maybe yourself included, that don’t think hunting is good or ethical or any of that. And that’s ok, because that’s your choice, but this family hunts. It starts young, and never ends, it seems. So, I know you are all waiting for the huge dose of humor that comes in my blog, and here you go….
The other day, L is out there hunting. He’s a big hunter, ready and raring to go. He shoots a squirrel on the left side of the yard, and since he scared all of the squirrel’s buddies away, he went over to the right side of the yard. Reasonable thinking, because of course, the squirrels over there couldn’t hear the gun that you can hear a half a mile away.
So on the other side of the yard, he shoots another one and goes back to the left side of the yard to collect that squirrel. Too bad the squirrel wasn’t dead. He was moving around a little, obviously injured, so L shot him again. Upon examination, the squirrel had never been shot in the first place. Evidently, L shot up in the tree, thought he hit the squirrel, and the squirrel fell out of the tree. From shock, presumably.
We had a great time with that. The great hunter couldn’t even shoot a squirrel out of the tree – he scared it out of the tree! L didn’t find it so amusing, however.
How about you?
