Sensitive Eyes

W-Eye So Sensitive?

After my Lash Lust post, I received several questions about sensitive eyes.  And I haven’t forgotten you girls, I’ve just been doing some product testing.  As a contact lens wearer myself and sufferer of chronic eye irritation, I feel your pain.  Literally.

Take care- Use good hygiene when it comes to your eyes.  Always wash hands thoroughly prior to touching your eyes, keep brushes clean, and discard products as they expire. (Yes, cosmetics expire; see Shelf Life)  And NEVER share products, especially mascara.

Read Labels- Look for products that are opthamologist-tested and approved, and only those.  Know what, if any, products trigger reactions.  Red Dye #5 is a frequent culprit.  It is present is shades of pink, purple, and brown, so be on the lookout.

Simple is Better- Many of the targeted formula mascaras for volume and length contain additives and fibers that can get into the eyes and irritate them.  For sensitive gals, tried and true formulas work the best.  Yes, your favorite pink and green tube, and Lancome Definicils are still great choices.  It may fun to try out new products, but in this case, when you find something that works for you, stick with it.

Shelf Life- Expired products may cause adverse reactions when used and no one wants that, especially not in or around the eyes.  Do yourself a favor and go through every piece of makeup you own, immediately.  If anything has a distinct or funny odor, throw it away.  If you can't remember when you bought it, throw it out.

Creams- 12-18 months

Liquids-1 year

Pencils- 2 years, or as soon as it dries and pulls at the eyelid

Lipsticks- 2 years

Mascara- Some say 6 weeks to 3 months, but I usually toss mine by the fourth week.  Your wand should make a ‘kiss’ sound when you pull it out of the tube.  If not, it’s time for a new one.  And please, never try to add water to rejuvenate.  Bacteria will grow at an alarming rate.

*Pumping the wand in and out will dry the product out even quicker.

Of course, if you experience frequent irritation, see a doctor.  You only get one set of eyes, take care of them.

Next up, I know your Dirty Little Secret…

Until then, be beautiful, inside and out!
