Sarah Palin: Confident or Delusional?

Sarah Palin was a hot topic on The View yesterday as I watched the tired, dried up Joy Behar spar with mousy little Elisabeth Hasselbeck about the former governor. Let me preface by saying I am not a fan of The View and think it much like every other daytime TV show, meaningless and a waste of air time. But, I was on the treadmill and lacked entertainment, good or bad. I would have breezed right by the channel, but like many people, my ears perk up when the topic of Sarah Palin is introduced.

The “discussion” arose because of the comedy bit that Palin did on The Tonight Show earlier this week. The argument centered on the unbelievable amount of confidence Sarah Palin seems to have in herself. While Hasselbeck praised Palin for being confident enough to put herself out there, Behar argued that she was not at all confident, just delusional. Most people either love Palin or hate her, and I’m not here to argue political parties. But as a women’s show, I think Palin should be celebrated because of her confidence and success as a woman. Instead, the show, which has now become a forum for political showdowns, treats a successful woman in our country as their own personal punching bag swinging from the political left and right.

Palin is a prime example of what women should aspire to be and can be; confident, strong and willing to stand up and fight for what they believe in, no matter how controversial. We should not forget that it was not too long ago in our history that women could not even vote, let alone be nominated as a vice presidential candidate. Her successes are at the heart of American women. It’s a testament to our country that you really can be anything you want to be if you fight hard enough. We don’t have to be Harvard educated, from a wealthy family or a MAN! We must have guts and determination to fight for our families and our country. As women, we are innately passionate creatures and should be praising each other as we rise in every aspect of our country, whether business, religion, politics or any other setting.

When we don’t see eye to eye with a person, is that when they become delusional? If Palin was a Democrat, would she still be delusional? Maybe it takes being a little delusional to be confident. Maybe being confident is actually being delusional. Either way, why condemn a woman for doing what most of us would never ever have the delusions or confidence to do?

Sarah Palin: Confident or Delusional?

I like this statement, "Maybe it takes ..."

"Maybe it takes being a little delusional to be confident." - Love it! And so true. Sometimes it seems like being overly practical and pragmatic can be limiting, at least that's what I've found in my own life. To one of your other points, however, I've gotta say -- Women have to get out there and take the hits. Being a punching bag is a rite of passage, I believe. We should not expect to be patronized with easier treatment just because we've broken into a traditionally man's world. Anyway, nice post, Mel!

Sarah Palin: Confident or Delusional?

Hmmmmmmm

I see your point, although I didn't see the View yesterday . I agree, women can be other women's worst enemy, and we need to support each other as women. BUT...Because Palin does put herself out there so (think the magazine cover with her in the biker shorts, the SNL and media appearances, etc...), she is opening herself up more to criticism...I am not a fan of her, but I do feel she understands the power of the media better than most, and knows how to use it to her advantage. Bad publicity( if it was even that) is better than no publicity. Without the media of today , most people would never have heard of Palin. I liek Sarita's comment as well... maybe it is a GOOD THING that we (women)are  considered fair game for punches, as well.
