There's a site comparing the old Roman empire with the USA today that has a page about Roman dress and why men today don't wear skirts, and why it would be better if they did (distraction from warfare) hmnnn the legions wore skirts and were not peaceful. After the growing influence of trousers after the Empire's crushing defeat at the battle of Adrianople at the hands of trousered cavalry opponents, pants were forbidden by Imperial decree in Rome in 393AD. Today the intolerance is in the other direction if the reader gets my meaning. It's nice to be free from trousers!
